from Puerto Vallarta to San Miguel de Allende and back
Hello friends -Would one of you lovely folks be able to tell me the best way to go from Puerto Vallarta to San Miguel de Allende? I'm willing to rent a car, but if there is a good (ie, safe, comfortable, reliable) means of public transportation that you know of, I'd be most grateful to know about your experience in this area. I'll have to make the trip back as well, in case there's any difference between service in one direction or another. I'll be a middle aged woman traveling by myself. My Spanish is good, in case that factors in.
Many thanks! Catherine

Most people would make that journey by first-class bus. There may be one or two that go direct but you will have more options if you change in Guadalajara. Check schedules for both legs at www.etn.com.mx or www.primeraplus.com.mx and also www.vallartaplus.com for GUadalajara to Puerto Vallarta. It's a long way (maybe as much as 12 hours door-to-door) so you could investigate flying from BJX airport with Aeromexico which have non-stops from 600 USD return which is obviously really expensive but a LOT quicker! Since it's just one of you I would not recommend driving - it's a long way to drive in one day and will work out expensive once you take into account insurance and road tolls.I should add that buses are very comfortable with a/c, bathrooms (many with separate male/female bathrooms) etc.

that´s a long busride if you are on a relatively short vacation. I would fly Aeromexico to MEX then bus it to SMA - if you go to PVR to MEX a quick search showed $370 round trip. As a mid-ager myself I find these killer busrides (even on nice first class buses) not only take it out of the vacation time itself but need a recovery day, and the cost difference is not significant. for cheaper yet you can go Interjet to Toluca. In either of these cases you have then the option to put in some time in Mexico City which is a wonderful place.3

To get from Puerto Vallarta to San Miguel Allende via Guadalajara and Leon.
Primera Plus operates more frequent buses from Guadalajara to Guanajuato state than Grupo Estrella Blanca.

You will go through Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city, Leon the leather Capitol of the world with a mile square shopping area of all types leather goods including shoes, jackets, pants, saddles ect located right next to the bus station, Guanajuato the most beautiful city in Mexico, then San Miguel. Stops at all are well worth the time,5
Catherine, do not drive. The buses are very good in Mexico. Last spring I did Puerto Vallarta-Guadalajara-Guanajuato by ETN bus and it was a wonderful trip, very comfortable. We split up our trip by stopping in Guadalajara, but you can do it all in one day by leaving early in the morning.
I did not have to have the most luxurious bus, which ETN is. However, I found their web page and booking online and paying in advance worked the best, which is why I chose this bus company over the other possibilities. If you buy a return ticket online you get a bigger discount on the price.

I gotta agree, don't drive. Buses are great in Mexico. I spent an entire summer just taking the bus that had the craziest sounding destination. Primera plus is a real good line as far as comfort goes. Sometimes though, you just gotta take the chicken bus...
