The Gansehaufel by the Old Danube an old historic bath place offers fine facilities, changing rooms, sand and grass area for enjoying sun and fine clean water.

Easy to reach by taking Ubahn line U-1 to VIC station then by gratis bath bus to the area.

www.gaensehaeufil.at I thinkn this aite is correct or just google.

Areas of the Donau insel / Danube Island are ok too.
Take U-1 to Donauinsel stop - walk down the steps and turn either way - bathing possible on either side of the island-

Be careful swimming in the river itself.
It's not not the cleanest stretch of water on the planet ! !

Most probably the above poster has never been in the Danube.

If only you knew, rather than just believing yourself. Correct - I don't like Vienna very much.
Having been there so often for work, I've got to know it very well and don't go a bundle on it.
This is a travel forum and we are entitled to opinions without criticism.
Parts of The Danube (including sections of it in Vienna) are disgusting.
I wonder why you didn't realise that. Perhaps it's you who's never seen it.
I have followed The Danube through all it's countries and (4) capital cities, right to the delta.
Sorry to disappoint you, but believe what you like.
Peace and respect.

I just live within sight of the Danube for many years thus would know a little more than a casual visitor not liking the city. Thus , I do not just believe myself by experience ,but know and see many others using and enjoying the river.
The river a boaters favorite- marinas close to Hilton Danube- marina on Donauinsel, marina by Nussdorf and more.
Perhaps some should spend some time in the environs including the Nature Park toward the south end of Vienna and continuing eastward- many species of water fowl etc.
One look in summer along the Danube in the city- thousands swimming - many water skiing or boarding- people fishing , people living here and thus actually know the river and using it.

Sorry battybilly, but you are a troll. I don't know what happened to you in Vienna, but please stop posting lies.

Official (EU) qualification of the danube in Vienna and as well after Vienna is 2 (out of 5) what is the second best class. But this is only about the main stream (where nearly nobody swims because the current is too strong). The water quality in the "Neue Donau" and the "Alte Donau", which are both seperated from the main stream (permanently in case of the "Alte Donau", while the "Neue Donau" is connected to the main river duringe floodings), is somewhere between classes 1 and 2 - completly no problem to swin there. And yes, the main stream is grey, but that has nothing to do with water quality and is just the natural color of big streams because there is a lot of soil material in the water - but this does not make the water disgusting in any way and was like this the last couple of million years.

For the OP, Gänsehäufel at "Alte Donau" is the best easy too reach choice. There are some wonderfull nature bathing places down in the Lobau, but it's not that easy to reach and you have to know where to go.

i am from vienna and have to say that the danube is not polluted at all, i have strongly to disagree with battybilly, dont know what happened to you in vienna, swimming in "alte donau" is a real pleasure on a hot summer day.
i would not swim in the river itself, but the river is not dirty for sure.......

http://www.wien.gv.at/rk/msg/2006/0427/017.html

its from a few years ago but they say the water quality is good.
as far as i was swimming there- admitting that i do not go daily because i have other things to do-
i found the water clean, i did not get any pimples or whatever, it didnt smell bad ,
and i enjoyed every visit to alte donau.
battybilly , hopefully you find better places somewhere else and i really do not want to argue any longer. freedom of opinion, maybe you picked the wrong dates ....

Do you have a direct pipe to your kitchen taps?
All that delicious oily water from the cruise boats as well. Must be lovely and clean.
The Danube in Vienna is disgusting in the summer.
Across The EU there are endless websites that 'Claim' how clean certain waterways and coasts are.
Believe them - and you'll belive anything.

Oily water from the cruise boats in Alte or Neue Donau? How will this get there? Is there someone carrying the water there in buckets?

Sorry for thinking there is a possibilty of searious discussion, you are an obvious troll.

Oh - dear. They're the usual signs of someone losing the plot and conversation.
Never mind. You can have the last word if you so wish.
Enjoy drinking and swimming your nice clean Danube water.
