How long stay in Palenque

Hi guys,

we have 3 options for our trip from Mexico city to Yucatan (the part of San Cristobal-Palenque). I need your advise:

Option 1:
15/02/13: Bus from San Cristobal to Palenque in the morning. Arrive in Palenque around 12.30pm. In the late afternoon visit the ruines.
16/02/13: The next day organised tour to visit Agua Azul + Misol Ha

Option 2:
15/02/13: Bus from San Cristobal to Palenque in the morning. Arrive in Palenque around 12.30pm. Relax in the afternoon (hotel with swimming pool)
16/02/13: The next day organised tour to visit the Ruines + Agua Azul + Misol Ha

Option 3:
14/02/13: Take the bus from San Cristobal in the evening, around 6 pm. BUT on this day we will do also a daytrip around San Cristobal, so maybe to much risk that we are too late for the bus?
15/02/13: Visit the ruines in the morning + relax in the afternoon (hotel with swimming pool)
16/02/13: Organised tour to visit Agua Azul + Misol Ha

Thanks a lot for your respons!!!!

Another suggestion maybe you weren't aware of:

From Palenque an all-day organized tour to Yaxchilan and Bonampak, two other outstanding archeaological sites.

At any rate, your options of relaxing after bussing in from San Ctristobal would be my choice.

Option X:
Arrive in Palenque, have lunch, look around, buy dinner & supplies, leave for El Panchan before dark, stay overnight in cabana in jungle (no pool), see Ruinas in morning before it gets so hot you can't breathe, leave for somewhere else or stay for another night.

Half a day in Palenque ... a day at the very most ... unless you're a serious student of archaeology for that period.

I have done this trip before and will do it again this Christmas.
If you are going from Mexico City and decide to drive, you should stop first at Misol-Ha and then Agua Azul since are on the way to Palenque. The ruins will take you at least one day and from there you can arrange a trip to Yaxchilan and Bonampak.
Don't miss Yaxchilan! but you need to arrange it in Palenque since the way to get there is on a boat through the Ursumacinta river.
After Yaxchilan you go back to Palenque and then the day after head up to San Cristobal you will get there in the afternoon but you can spend the evening and night there which is amazing and if you have time the day after before leaving San Cristobal, stop by at San Juan Chamula which is a small town pretty close and you will be amazed with the church and the traditions they have.
Hope it helps and Enjoy Mexico!

After many trips to Palenque I like your option 2.. Makes sure you tour the museum at the Plalenque Ruins. . I also have been several times to Misol Ha and Agua Azul and they are worth a visit. Photos of these places can be seen on my website wolfcalls.com. If you have time to got to Frontera Coraozal then the other Maya ruins are well worth it plus Frontera Corazal is a nice place to spend a couple of days. You can also cross over the river and go on into Guatemala and check out the Tikal ruins. You can catch a bus in Planaque to take you to Fronter Corazal.
