#9 kalpea - best to look ip Cinque Ports on wikipedia or similar but is old french rather than italian and was an ancient federation for protection of southern England in case of attack by those wicked people across the Channel ( an attitude which still endures among a minority people in UK! ). Hope you've got time to do justice to the scenic route, there's lots to see.

From Old French 'Cink porz' and from Latin 'Quinque portus', meaning 'Five ports.'

National Express actually have a bus from Eastbourne along the coast to Cornwall each day.
Not via inland.

If you want to relax and look out of the window.

It's not spectacular countryside, but the quiet corners of Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset are beautiful. Most tourists race through - if you have time, walk on the Downs, or drift into Salisbury Cathedral - great ways to break up a journey.

Good shout for Salisbury Cathedral. The old parts of the city are nice too.

Why not just fly into Exeter airport?

I suppose it goes back to the original posting really.
OP asks.... "Is there any appeal driving from Dover to Exeter?" Down to nothing more than that.
The flight option is a good one, but I'd certainly prefer the drive with some scenic stops en-route.
Not for everyone though, for sure.

But the drive , any route, is worth it to get to Devon and Cornwall....
