Budget accomodation

I checked the threads in FAQ list but they are all old and do not carry the current prices. I used to know some GHs recommended by LP in Banlamphoo before 2004-5 for 120-150 baht.

This time I am planning to travel more extensively around the country (Khorat, Khon Kaen, Udon, Mukdahan, Ubon, perhaps Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Lampang) but I will also spend at least a week in Bangkok. I think 3 to 4 weeks in all. How much should I plan to spend?

Can anybody give me an idea and/or alternatively help me link another (newer) thread that gives the relevant info on current prices of budget accomodation and food? Thank you.

It's a big question that depends on your spending habits as much as anything else, but accommodation costs have definitely risen since 2004-5!

My favorite budget guesthouse in Banglamphu now costs 250 baht for a single room, 300 baht for a double. Spotlessly clean fan rooms, toilet/shower down the hall. A couple of years ago it was 170 single/250 double to stay there, so prices are definitely on the up. No doubt you can still find cheaper, but personally I prefer to pay a few extra baht for a big step up in quality and cleanliness.

In Ubon last month I stayed at the Sri Isaan hotel. 480 baht for an aircon double, with breakfast available for an extra 60 baht. Nice hotel and good value.

Chiang Mai guesthouses everywhere for around 200 baht .... last week I stayed in a good value aircon place, "Juan Cume House" for 350 which someone recommended recently on this forum.

You are 7 years older - maybe move up to something a little better in the 500-600 baht range to reflect your improved salary, etc. Off season it is easy to find a cheap room with A/C, private toilet, TV and sometimes free WiFi too. Being older now you may want a guest house or cheap hotel where you do not have to share toilets and showers with teenage kids.

Bangkok.
Chart Guest House.

Hi,

OP you can still get a bed in Banglamphu for 150. But me not being a cheapskate go upmarket and pay 180 for a fan room with shared bathroom. Clean and airy, I always stay at the same place. Left there late September and back again in January. So some places have not risen in price at all hardly.

As for how much to spend, give us a clue of how you wish to travel, eat and what you want to do and maybe we can help you.

i'm travelling budget-style at the moment in thailand, paying between 150 and 250 baht for accommodation...eating most meals at food stalls and night markets, 30 to 40 baht (the food is excellent by the way!)...so still very affordable...the rest depends on yourself, do you like to drink/party etc, then obviously you'll have to provide for that in your budget! one (large) beer easily costs more then the whole meal...

^ Brax, I think maybe I've promoted "my" Banglamphu place once too often on Thorn Tree, and they've got popular and hence raised their prices. I'll keep quiet about it from now on! :-)

Our "place" on Soi Rambuttri raised their prices after we left earlier this year from what they'd been fo as long as I remembered. If you find a place you like, I see no reason to go looking elsewhere just because you're 7 years older. We've been going to our cheapie place since 1998 and see no reason to go up market. In fact, we've only ever stayed at 2 guest houses in Bkk since 1990.

^ I like my cheapie place too and will probably always go back there.

But as I get older (I am 35 now (eeek!), and these days you are more likely to find me enjoying a glass of wine instead of a dozen beers or a bucket of Sangsom and red bull), I must admit that I am partial to an occasional splurge at a midrange (or higher) hotel :-)

In Mukdahan, I paid 380 baht for a nice little hotel near Indochina market. I bought great food at the night market. Cafe Good Mook had good coffee for around 60 baht.

I don't drink and party, but I like books and quiet.:) I pay a little extra for my room.

Wait until you are even older and you have to limit your beer intake because you have to get up too often during the night for the "outflow!"

Sorry, when I see single 50 year old and older males wanting to stay in hostels with teenage boys I kind of figure they are there for the shared toilets and showers! Over 50 you should have enough income to pay a whopping big 600 baht for a private hotel room with your own toilet, shower and even TV!

Hi,

Hey careful CrazyAl, could take that personal. For the record I get those places because I am a cheapskate and every penny counts to this old skinflint.

Someone needs to get his mind out of the gutter with such a sweeping generalization!! To someone who travels to western countries it would be the norm because in countries like Australia and New Zealand, it is the cheapest form of accommodation.

Thanks to everybody. I must say I give preference to GHs over hotels. Price is important for me, but safety foremost. I used to stay at a good and very cheap one near Soi Sampraya for 80 baht and it was ok, very quiet and clean! It closed in late 2003... But outside Bangkok I will be a newcomer and wish to avoid to have to pay too many study fees...I do not drink alcohol but I would enjoy a nice meal at a good (though low edge) restaurant every other day; at other times food stalls and markets can do.
