Russian visa in Bangkok

Hello,

Just want to give some info for other travelers. We are two American travelers and were able to get a Russian visa (30 days tourist) at the consulate in Bangkok. This is generally not allowed (we only had regular 30 day tourist stamp for Tgailand) but the manager/head of the consulate was there and we explained our situation and he said we could apply. He said there was a "special arrangement" between Rusdia and the US but gave no details on that.

If you try this:
-I'm not sure you can get the rush visa. We waited one week which was fine
-you will need to pay in Thai Baht ($140 usd at normal exchange rate)
-we got invitation letter from realrussia.com (about $50 for 2 people)
-they asked for proof of medical insurance (we have travel insurance through world nomads and this was ok)

Good luck!

Thanks for this update.

I am curious as to what is your "situation" other than being a US passport holder.

There are other reports that some passport holders can apply outside the country of their passport but that the processing time is two weeks. Interesting that it was only a week.

He didn't elaborate on the special situation and I didn't want to press the issue. We just have normal US passports, nothing special. The processing time was actually 8 days (they asked when we'd come back and we gave a date 8 days later).

Hi,

I can confirm that US citizens can get a Russian Visa at the Embassy in Bangkok. It doesn't matter if you only have a 30 day visa, the US and Russia have an arrangement. But this applied to Americans only. My husband (a UK passport holder) could not, without having a 3 month or residence visa for Thailand. This is exactly the same in Phnom Penh, and I would guess the rest of SEA. :(
