Where to go in winter?

Hi all,

I am currently in Hong Kong and will have one week of holidays (9 days) over christmas and I would love to go somewhere to China. I have, however, been to most of the classic things (Beijing, Harbin, Shanghai, Guilin, Sichuan and Yunnan and some more). So I wondered whether there are some nice spots to go to experience some nature, possibly with snow and some hiking (I am physically fit and hiked before) or even camping. I do have warm clothes, I am prepared to spend money on a flight or two (train and bus are equally good, though). I speak some mandarin and I am pretty much open to anything. Does anyone have nice or better even weird ideas what to do?

Thank so much in advance,
FCM

I've read reports that Jiuzhaigou (in northeastern Sichuan) is striking in the winter (have not been myself.)

Thanks for the idea. Do you maybe have some more information on the weather conditions? I thought about going there, since I have been there 2 years ago during autumn and it was wonderfull! Do you know if it is possible to climb one of the surrounding mountains? probably to much snow...

HI, Jiuzhaigou is a good place to visit. The tempreture there in Winter is about 3-5 °C. Always good sunshine in daytime and colder in everning.

Yes, could work as well. Maybe climb that moutina there. I've been in Sapa for 2 days hiking through the villages but I never climbed the mountain (I forgot the name but wasn't it the highest in Vietnam?) Is it easy to get a vietnamese Visa in Hong Kong?

Depending on your passport, you might not need a visa for short stays in Vietnam.
How about Zhangjiajie?

I have a German passport. I think I need a visa but probably I could get one. Will there be snow in Zhangjiajie in Winter? I just checked, probably it would be possible to do both in 9 days, would need some time on trains and busses, but that's part of the fun!

Zhangjiajie is at much lower altitudes than Jiuzhaiguo, I guess the chances of snow are much better in Jiuzhaiguo. I visited Z. in February last year just after a snowfall. Pretty. But even without the snow it is beautifull. Jiuzhaiguo is high on my todo list.
I hold a Danish passport, and do not need a visa for Vietnam. But, I'd get only a limited number of days without the visa - maybe 7, I do not remember.

Yes the mountain is Fanispan. Can be fogged in and misty that time of year though up there in Sapa.

Maybe it is easier to stay in China. Take a tour to Zhangjiajie-Jiuzhaigou-Huanglong and then maybe Chengdu or Hailuogou NP and then back to HK.

There have direct flight Between Hongkong and LiJiang (YunNan), so you come to LiJiang,Xiangri-la and Deqin, also you can do some soft trekking around Tiger leaping gorge and YuBeng in Meili snow mountain.
