Place like Tulum near Puerto Vallarta?

hello! I stayed in Tulum sometime ago and loved it. Now I am going to Puerto Vallarta and would like to find a similar place to stay. i.e. a small, low-key village with beachfront huts and some decent food, and far from the crowds. Thanks in advance for any leads, I really appreciate your time!

It must have been along time since you were in Tulum area as it was discovered and is now expensive and a hot place to hang out. Every travel mag out there pushes a Tulum experience and it is nothing like it was say 20 years ago.

Nothing near PV anymore. Bucarias was what you want but alas it is now busy & crowded.
You might consider heading South to Zihuatanejo & staying out at Barra de Potosi, a lovely dirt road village about 30 minutes away withh a lagoon, excellent for kayaking it's many secret passages, strolling the mostly empty 9 1/2 mile beach, swimming in the ocean & eating at the 6 or so beach cafés. Small Inns only. Nothing over a dozen rooms.

Have you checked out Yelapa? You need need to take a water-taxi from Boca de Tomatlan to get there, so it's really secluded. I'm pretty sure there are some nice bungalows right on the water.

To the north, San Pancho, which is right above Sayulita is still pretty quaint.

Trouble with Yelapa is the hordes of day trippers that cover the beach each day. Evenings are wonderful but days just too crowded.

Is it the beach huts or the beachfront village that attracts you? I flew into PV about two weeks ago and took a bus south to the town of Melaque. No beach huts that I noticed, but very laid back and hugging the beach. Plenty of good food options but nothing visibly fancy (which is a plus in my book) and definitely no tourist crowds; in fact, over the course of three days I saw a total of three visitors. It's four hours from PV but an easy trip. I had a great bungalow just steps from the beach.

"a small, low-key village with beachfront huts and some decent food, and far from the crowds. "
Agree with PW, this no longer describes Tulum at all.

The "hordes of day trippers" in Yelapa are only there from noon till about 2pm, good time to hike up the river, it's only 2 hours a day.

"low key" and "far from the crowds" mean different things to different people. Relativity, man....
