macedonia or montenegro

Hi All, will be traveling in late spring in Eastern Europe a for a month. I'll need at least a couple weeks for Romania (been there before and there's a lot I want to explore), but I'm intriqued by both Montenegro and Macedonia. I know that both have national parks, but if I had to choose between them, what would you recommend if my interest in natural beauty (forests, lakes, etc) and a more natural (non-touristed) background. I don't want to go where there are only tons of hotels, beach resorts, etc. I'd love an old quaint town. ALSO: can I travel by train from Tirana Albania into Montenegro? Thanks!

Hi....

If I had an other two weeks after Romania, I'd do a week in both - if budget allows.
However, if I 'Had' to choose just one - then for me it would be Montenegro.

Montenegro, by a mile. The scenery is far more dramatic.

But, no there are no trains from Tirana to Montenegro. In general, there are surprisingly few train routes in the Balkans. To get from Albania to Montenegro you'll need to take a bus, drive, or fly.

Thanks, cool! One more question: is Albania "safe" (as much as any place in southern Europe)? And wifi there also?
Thanks

Yes, Albania is safe and WiFi is found at hotels, hostels and guesthouses throughout the country. It's an easy place to travel.

Why don't you also consider Albania ? Albania has interesting villages in a mountain scenery, Valbona and even more Thethi, with GHs. Montenegro has a similar landscape, but Albania is less touristy and cheaper.
Actually you can cross the 3 countries.

If you go from Romania to Albania, you can also cross Kosovo. From Pristina, you go to Gjakova and there to Bajram Curri in Albania to reach the mountains in Valbona. From Valbona, there is a one-day hike to Thethi through an easy pass.

I'll try that if I wind up going from Romania. I have to wait and see what cheap flights are available from Berlin or Frankfurt to either Bucharest OR, say, Zagreb/Lubiana. I want to avoid the train from the north of Germany all the way to the Balkans (did it before) due to time constraints and the cost of German rail.

This is of course a personal opinion, but I liked Albania much better than Montenegro, so I'd concentrate on the former.

And yes, Albania is as safe as any other sorrounding country.

it must be great. Would 4 or 5 days be enough to really get a taste of the culture? I will also be in Kiev and in northern Romania and have to decide where to spend more/less time.
