New Canadian Currency

During my previous travels to Canada I have kept some Canadian dollar bank notes home. I note that Canada is now releasing their new plastic currency. I still have notes from the "birds of Canada" and "Canada journey" series, from $50 downwards. I note the new $50 has been released, so will shops accept the paper $50 notes? I plan on visiting next month.

surewill but you do realise because of inflation your 50s are only worth 25 lol too bad canadian no collector realy wants them. only pre 67 silver coins has any intrinsic value for its silver content.

All Canadian banknotes issued since 1935 (when the Bank of Canada first began printing money) remain legal tender and retain their full nominal face value.

You may occasionally encounter a merchant who is reluctant to take $50 notes (of any series), however.

In which case they can be exchanged for new polymer notes free of charge @ any chartered bank in Canada.

I doubt you will run into any problems using our old currency, I still have some kicking around as well!

The new notes seem to stick together and are hard to separate IMO.

Some vending machines do not (yet) recognize the new bills. As noted above, the old cash is as good as new; all of it is legal tender. The Canadian$ is just about at par with the US$ but the Australian$ is worth about $1.04 Cdn. Australia has had non-paper banknotes for several years. The new stuff is supposedly harder to counterfeit and doesn't mind being accidently run through a washing machine.
