Punta Uva - Getting There and Staying There

We are flying in to San Jose arriving in the late afternoon/evening of November 23rd - we are travelling with 2 small children, 2 and 4 and so will likely spend our first night in the city.

On the morning of the 24th we would like to travel to the Caribe coast and we are strongly considering Punta Uva. Can anyone confirm that there is a rental car drop here? Or at least in Puerto Viejo?

Or even better, where would I find a current bus schedule to this area?

Although - I would like to hear some feedback on whether it might be best to have our own transportation given that we would like to explore the area as well - is it easy to take taxis/bus if we wanted to visit Cahuita, Puerto Viejo etc? We definitely want to go to the Jaguar Rescue and Sloth Sanctuary as well - are these easily accessed by public transportation?

Lastly - looking for accommodation recommendations in the area of $50 per night.

Thanks!!!

1. bus schedule http://www.thebusschedule.com/cr/

2. for rental car information and places to stay: http://www.puertoviejosatellite.com

3. it's easy to get a taxi to visit cahuita - or you can just get the bus which is easy to get and frequent, as you can see from the schedule. just tell the driver you want to get off at the sloth sanctuary or wherever. (note that the sloth sanctuary is north of cahuita)

Clearbelle, You couldn't have picked a more beautiful beach and area. It relaxes me just thinking about it. You and your kids will love it.

I was last there in 2006 and there wasn't any rental car drops at that time. Of course things can change fast so not sure about now. In fact all there was to rent were scooters and had to get gas out of a barrel. It's definitely not the Pacific coast, which is what is so great about it in my opinion. I heard they actually have a bank and atm there now though so who knows? The rental cars will come eventually. But whichever cabinas/hotel you choose will be able to call you a taxi. Then if you like the driver you could ask him for his phone # if he doesn't already offer and he will be happy to pick you up whenever you want no doubt. Or just take the bus.

Have a great trip!
