But you need to get a visa in your home country, and it's not that easy to get the visa.

Bonjour from Islamabad,

Wahga border is open so one could cross it while having a Pakistan visa in hand.

Samjhota express stopped around 2008 after the deadly train attacks.

For stay
Regale Internet Inn

and

Garden Hotel
Lahore.

Bon voyage ..

Dress as locals while traveling across Pakistan, Shalwar,Kamees for males and a shawl for female travelers.

Given this query was posted in the India forum, I'm going to make the assumption that the OP is intending to travel to Pakistan via India.

That being the case, there's only one border crossing, which as #1 indicates is Wagah.

If you want to make the entry, be sure to get there early (if you want to watch the closing ceremony).

Not having been there myself, can someone indicate:
  • are there any requirements to be on one side or the other after the closing of the gates ?
  • is there a Pakistan side and an Indian side ?
  • if so, does the OP need to be on the Pakistan side for the closing and,
  • is there transport from Wagah after the border closing, to a nearby city for her to get a hotel for the night ?

Bonjour from Islamabad,

Interesting queries zoltan.

One should not miss the closing ceremony at Wahga.

Taxis are available for the travel to Lahore from Wahga border.

Wow! Great info, thank you!

But what is the closing ceremony?

Late in the afternoon, the border gate is literally "closed" between India & Pakistan.

There's a formal "ceremony" which can be seen in the Michael Palin documentary "Himalaya", in which the guards "snub" each other and are very rigid in their movements.

If you have time, it's worth stopping there but there will be very long traffic snarls after the closing.
