Cycling Kampot Cambodia to Ha Tien Vietnam
Just wondering if anyone here has done this? I plan to cycle through from PP, Takeo, Kampot and then onwards into Vietnam into Ha Tien across the border. Im keen to take the short cut proposed by renowned tourer Jan Houtermans.http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?page_id=137216
We are doing this on Bike Friday folding bikes. Im particularly interested to know if its easy to get a taxi/bus out of Ha Tien back to Phnom Penh with our bikes inside and any tips that you can share.
Thank you & ride safe!

Re getting back to PP - anything is possible, but I imagine it would be difficult to get a Vn taxi to take you to PP.You can ride from Ha Tien to Chau Doc in Vn, then take a boat across the border to PP - that is what I will be doing in a few weeks. The boat sounds like a good way to travel up the Mekong. If you don't want to cycle to Chau Doc, there are buses and I imagine that a taxi would be no problem. The road is meant to be alongside a canal and bumpy - but don't know anymore than that.
I was confused why you want to cross into Vn, just for Hat Tien, but as you are ASEAN - its all visa free, lucky you.
I rode PP > Takeo > Kampot, but that was about 6 years go, so don't know what roads like now but then paved but lots of potholes. There is accom in Takeo (plus the fortified house of a one legged (or one armed) homicidal Khmer Rouge general).

Your trip sounds fun. I took the boat up to PP fm Chau Dac some time back and it was really a very slow boat. Took ages! Popping into Ha Tien for the heck of it and becoz I havent been there. We have time constrains, so that explains the quick exit. One legged KR General in Takeo, oooh. Must pop in to check that out. I don't supposed he will welcome cyclists? Thanks Simon!

I cycled Kampot-Ha Tien in 2009, easy enough in a day. In Cambodia some of the road to the border was unpaved. The turnoff for this road wasn't clearly signed, so you may have to ask. Ha Tien is an interesting place to explore. From Ha Tien, why not ride to Chau Doc, doable in a day, then cross the border back into Cambodia. Travelogue and notes are at www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/AsiaAgain.5
It's mostly flat with the exception of Sam Mountian?, 5-10k from Chau Doc but thats a bump so no need to worry. Looking at my GPS graph, I was averaging about 18k an hour so the trip took roughly six hours. I remember it was hot but like always there are lots of roadside stops.
