Why would they ban short term apartment rentals?
It was mainly two-fold:
1) Hotels have different zoning requirements than apartments, particularly with regards to safety. The hotels run out of apartments violated these requirements.
2) Housing is so damn expensive and in short supply. Landlords were trying to make more money with visitors than they would with tenets, further aggravating the situation.

What would be the results? If it was me I'd do it anyway.
Eviction.

I can see # 2 being a problem. Although visitors looking to their pocket books probably wouldn't care.

So is # 1 a real world problem? In regards to safety and stuff? Or just the bureaucrats getting busy.

We're going sometime before long but only for a week and we'd stay in a hotel anyway.

I know a lot of friends who have rented apartments and have been completely fine.. they have saved thousands of dollars over nearly a 3 week stay! I think it´s just a way for NYC to squeeze more money out of tourists!

It was a real problem with people renting spaces that weren't secure, theft, filth, I believe someone was murdered at a "hostel" in the Times Square area.
