Vietnam Itin suggestions for 12 nights

We are planning to fly into HCMC on Feb. 17th and fly out of Hanoi on March 1st which gives us 12 nights in Vietnam.

Spend 3? nights in HCMC. Plan to visit Cu Chi. Do you suggest that we take an excursion to Mekong Delta canals? Do you recommend a home stay in the Vinh Long area?

Hoi An 1 or 2 nights?

Would like to stay 2 nights in Hue and then fly to Hanoi

1 night on junk Ha Long Bay/Bai Tu Long Bay

Should we spend much time in Hanoi or would we be better off spending what little time we have in someplace like Mai Chau?

We're arriving in Vietnam after having spent Spring Festival in Huaning, Yunnan, China & visiting friends in Chiang Rai & then spending 3 nights in Siem Reap touring the wats so we don't need to spend a lot of time seeing the same type of thing in Vietnam that we've already seen.

Would appreciate any suggestions as we have so little time & don't want to waste it.

I would certainly spend at least three days in Ha Noi. It is a fascinating city with much to see. It is both hectic (The Old Quarter, the French Quarter) and relaxing (Hoan Kiem, Lenin Park, Ho Tay).
3 nights in HCMC would be fine. There is a lot to see and do there. If you go to the Cu Chi tunnels try to combine it with some time at the extraordinary Cao Dai temple.

Most people spend just 1 or 2 nights in HCMC.

About 2 days in HCMC is plenty. Mekong is worth seeing as are the tunnels. Hanoi is interesting and there are nice sites outside of town. One night on Halong Bay is fine. We like Hoi An and spent two nights there with plans for a 1-day photo tour that got cancelled due to flooding. Still two days was nice, we rented scooters and rode eeverywhere. Hue is nice for a night or two and we really liked the Sapa area as well. Hope this helps

Basically HCMc is just a landing point ...and frankly an overpriced one, considering the local economy.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Any advice on a home stay in the Vinh Long area? Have read that many of the "home stays" are more like staying in a small hotel or guesthouse without much interaction with the owners of the home.
