Perth to Broome

This week Mrs Raki took the bus from Perth to Broome with stopovers in Geraldton and Carnarvon.

Most hostels are full of itinerant workers who are staying for months at a time- people looking jobs down the mines or picking mangoes and bananas. Book in advance if you want a nice room!

Very nice new and extended pier in Carnarvon, also an interesting aboriginal cultural centre a couple of km out of town.

She was surprised that she was the only white face, apart from the driver, on the bus from Carnarvon to Broome! This is 22 hour bus ride!

She also said the LP Western Oz Guide for the NW is out of date- not really LP's fault as there is so much development taking place!

She stayed at Foreshore backpackers in Geraldton, and the Fish and Whistle in Carnarvon.

The Fish and Whistle (aka Port Hotel) is Wilson (aka Iron Bar) Tuckey's old pub! There is no longer an iron bar kept behind the bar! Or maybe there is, but there was no need to use it while she was in the bar!

She is rather glad that she is flying from Broome back to Perth!

Thank you for the report, Raki. I wonder how much it will change in the next 5 years, when I am hoping to do it in a campervan.

I drove from Perth to Kununurra in a Land Rover in 1980 - bet it's changed since then.... dirt roads in them old days!

Bellart , It's interesting looking in old (60's, 70's and early 1980's) road atlasses
Theres so many major bitumen roads that just didn't exist back then, Newman to Port Hedland (and across karijini NP to tom price) being the main one..

Btw could mrs raki not get a lift with some itinerant backpackers in a hippyvan going north to Broome ?
