Seeking neighborhood in Chile: easy bicycling & good restaurants
I will be in Santiago for about 2 weeks in January. I have been using Google Street View to explore, but all the recommended neighborhoods (Providencia, etc) feel very residential and spread out. Ideally, I would like to walk out of my apartment and see bars and restaurants and a "downtown" feeling. Imagine like the the lower east side of Manhattan. Is there a comparable neighborhood in Santiago? Will I be ok there with no car, just a bicycle? Thank you!

Apartment? You mean hotel or hostel or apartment hotel?
Try Bellavista or Lastarria
Eg:

Metro will take you anywhere. Bike only near your neigborhood but enough to enjoy. No car is needed>Apartments are easy to find and better than hotels...$ 4-700 per week are available. Try vrbo.com/ santiago. Providencia is good , busy and modern , residentiall but shopping malls and more everywhere. It is away from downton . Suggest staying around Pedro de Valdivia Metro station, a very decent location. From here you can safely bike along park type avenues ( forgot names but I have done them ) then bike up to Cerro San Cristobal, a city/zoo mountain in Bellavista neighborhood...another desirable area for night life and restaurants.
Good luck

You guys are so right about Bellavista, it looks beautiful! I've been able to find some apartments that sit right between Bellavista and Providencia for a pretty good price.4
Also check out barrio brasil and barrio yungay! Both very cultural and great for cycling and barrio yungay has a cultural heritage route which you can cycle or walk. Bellavista (also arty & cultural) is more central though, if you're also looking to explore providencia etc.5
My recommendations:- Lastarria: charming area, close to everything, great bars and restaurants, 2 metro stations, close to the park.
- Bellas Artes: same as above
- Bellavista: lovely, but it can be a little noisy and dangeorus at night.
- Brasil: absolutely nice, quiet neighborhood, a little outside centro, but with a metro station and plenty of buses.
Providencia is also a good option, but it is comuna (or a district? bigger than a neighborhood), so there are plenty of neighborhoods to choose from.
