Father Son Trip with 9 year OldLooking for destination suggestions for a 10 day to 2 week father son trip in July or August 2013. We rented a car and drove the Ring Road around Iceland last summer and looking for a different experience next year. The destination would ideally allows for lots of nature, hiking, culture, and affordable and unique adventure where we can really get to know the place. We'd prefer an indpendent travel experience where we can control our schedule and go where our moods take us. We've been focused on Jordan but are thinking that summer is just too hot for the Middle East. Does anyone have any other ideas? We're Canadians open to almost anywhere but I'm drawing a blank this time around.

1Jordan is nice, but I guess it could be too hot then. Other options: South Africa - it is easy to self-drive and the garden route has lots of hiking options (and wildlife). We just got back from Sri Lanka and found that a really nice place to visit. You would probably need to use a car/driver or public transport to get around but it has a lot of diversity (beaches, hiking, elephants, historic sites, national parks) and the culture is really nice. SE Asia also has alot of good options (Thailand, Malaysia), but with 2 weeks you may need more planning to ensure you get to see what you want. Bali may be a good option for staying spontaneous, since the distances between places isn't huge.

A canoeing adventure in the Boundary waters or Vancouver Island/Sunshine coast
Backpacking some of the PCT.
Big Island of Hawaii has nature, hiking and culture - and you can camp some, as well as stay in vrbos, airbnb and do the resort thing, if you so wish. Ooo and there is lava flowing too. There is enough to do for a week for sure, and you can tie into another Hawaiian island like Maui or Kauai.
Morocco, India, Japan - all would take planning but you could tie in the nature, hiking and culture aspect of things. I realised that Japan may not be as affordable as the others...

4So what kind of things do you like? Iceland would have been a great road trip and nature experience, are you looking for the same kind of thing or something different? I often find picking a theme helps find the right place and create a sense of interest and enthusiasm when planning.
You know, are you looking to explore or interested in a particular culture? A particular climate, environment or natural features? Follow a historical theme or trail, try a particular sport or activity, travel in a particular way. Do you want to be out of your depth or have some familiar references? Do you want to travel long haul or do something different closer to home? What are your son's interests?
For the ultimate indie experience What about a walking trail? Or a biking tour - great indie way to travel, good bonding, 9 years old a good age for a first solo tour, really get to know a place, meet people. Or a sailing vacation (learn for a week and sail solo the second). Or a canoe journey?

5I just want to throw in a completely different destination: Romania.
We spend 4 weeks travelling there and found it an immensly rewarding destination.
It has all the aspects you are requesting; it's an unique adventure and very suited to independent travel. The nature is mindboggling; the carpathians, with wolves, bears, etc; the donau delta; and easily accesseable. The culture is unique, both from a human perspective as from the castles, churches, cities, etc. And for some relaxation, you can drop over to the black sea coast.
It's just a thought.

6Thanks Aryannayncke. Hadn't considered Romania but will do some research now. And thanks adventureproject for posing some good questions to help me vector in on an ideal destination. Cheers.
