so much to do but i dont know what to choose! 5 days in cyprus

Hi all,

Desperately need help working out what to do and where to go - we are in Cyprus mid november for 5 nights (including the day we fly out - 8pm on final day)

We are flying into Larnaca and out of Paphos.

We are 2 adults and a 3 year old.

Should we hire a car? We want to see as much as possible but dont want to rush around too much either.

What you recommend. including a relaxing day in the middle where we dont need to rush too much.

We want to venture into Northern Cyprus but do we have enough time?

We want to see sites but also sit on the beach a little (weather permitting)

Tell us which places you want to visit in North Cyprus and we can tell you whether you will have enough time for that.
A rental car wouldn't be a bad idea wiith a 3 year old in a country with poor public transport. But once again, it depends on the places you want to visit.

Beach time is unlikely in November unless you get some really nice weather. Average temps in mid November will be about 17 C. on the coast and cooler inland in the mountains.

Definitely hire a car as public transport is terrible.

Try to visit the painted churches in the Troodos area but bring warm clothes as it will be colder in the mountains. Look for some reports here on the TT.

Visit Cyprus website can help with planning ideas.

the only things i know about for northern cyprus that look worth while are the ruins of salamis and Famagusta

thinking of an itinerary like this.

friday: arrive late in larnaca spend
sat: spend the day there and surrounding area.
sunday travel to nicosia spend the day there and into northern cyprus

then not sure..

then we have monday tuesday and wednesday (fly out late wed night)

should we go to limossol or straight to paphos? (we fly out of there on the wednesday)

As you visit Lefkosia (Nicosia) anyway, the easyiest was to go from there to Famagusta is the bus from the North Cypriot part of the town. There are some regular buses which run along the coast from there to Salamis - Bogaz ..., but a taxi may be the easier solution.
Other gems in North Cyprus (easier to visit by car):
Cruisader castles: St. Hilarion (close to Kyrenia), Kantara, Buffavento
Abbey: Bellapais (close to Kyrenia)
Roman theatre, roman basilica: Soli
Greek churches and monasteries: all over the aera

South Cyprus: some buses and excellent shared taxi services between Larnaca, Aya Napa, Lefkosia (Nicosia), Lemessos (Limassol) and Paphos.

SO looking like this as a final itinerary.

Friday night arrive - stay in Larnaca
Saturday-Sunday night - stay in Nicosia ( do a trip to Famagusta and surrounding area)
Monday-Tuesday night - stay in paphos (visit paphos and surrounding and try to get to Limassol)
Fly out Wed night late

Is this do-able or too much do you think?

thanks again for any replies.

I think it's fine. So you will be able to decide on the spot whether you want to visit Larnaca (St. Lazarus Church, Hala Sultan Tekke, etc.), where you will go in North Cyprus (only Famagusta-Salamis-Engomi) or Kyrenia-Bellapais-St. Hilarion too) and whether you want to stop over at Lemessos/Limassol/Leymosun and Kourion on your way from Nicosia to Paphos.

On 2 Nov, 2012, at 4:30 pm., I will be doing a free talk in Larnaca on "Obama as a Young Writer in Literary Los Angeles". The talk will be at the Cornaro institute. Open to the public. Jim Fitzmaurice

I would recommend a hire car to get up into the mountains, but before people start the usual disinformation campaign about Cyprus having poor public transport (it actually has quite a good bus system) you should check out the bus timetables at www.cyprus-bus.com to see whether you need a hire car every day of your stay. Larnaca to Nicosia on the bus for example is very easy, a frequent service and a lot easier than trying to navigate Nicosia by car. Nicosia itself is better on foot anyway.

While you are in Larnaca do pay a visit to the Cornaro Institute, an art centre located in Mehmet Ali Street near St Lazarus Cathedral. Details at www.artcyprus.org

Also I recommend you get to see the painted Mediaeval chapel at Pyrga. It's not a usual tourist site but beautiful ancient wall paintings. Then get up to Lefkara, between Larnaca and Limassol. In Paphos, another unusual site to visit is the Sculpture Garden in the village of Lempa. The kids will love this too, especially the sculpture of King Kong!

Hi there, having lived in Cyprus for 8yrs i would say tha whatever you see will be amazing, i love the country so much. I never clicked that muhc with Paphos so going there should be just the end of the road to catch the flight. The locals will love your 3yr old and i would defo reccomend going up into the Troodos mountains they are fab you can get a better feel for the real country up there.
Limassol is amazing, but so touristy now and cery expensive.
Enjoy

..plan enough time for Paphos in order to visit there the most splendid mosaics of Cyprus (among the best of the Eastern Mediterranean, together with those of Apamea, the Hauran, Antiochia, Urfa ...), the tombs of the Kings, the 3 museums, Paphos castle, Adonis Baths, the Ayia Solomoni Church, the Ayios Neophytos Monastery, the Panayia Chrysopolitissa church, et. etc.
If yo like scenic landscapes, go for a day trip from Paphos to Latchi/Neochorio - Loutra Aphroditi.

wow so so many options. thank you all again for replies and the new ones!!

So far booked Larnaca 1 night then 2 nights nicosia and still plan on the final 2 nights in paphos (using paphos as a base for seeing as much of the western side of cyprus as possible)

I was thinking only get a car for when we leave nicosia and travel to see everything between to paphos in our last 3 days of the trip.

going to bus from larnaca to nicosia. then get a bus from nicosia (turkey) for a day trip to nth cyprus

so everything near larnaca is easy to get to without a car - thats what im hoping!!

Hi All,

I have 1 more issue.

There are so many car rental options but in nicosia they dont seem so many!!

Especially as we need it from a sunday pick up.

anyone want to provide a couple of reliable that arent the big names. I also need an auto - which makes it harder with availability.

thanks alot again to all!
