2There is a 14 day free border pass available in Ha Tien. However, the Vietnamese immigration officials might ask for a US$5/10 donation before processing your passport. This allows you to go into Ha Tien and Phu Quoc regions. You could go all the way to Hanoi, but this pass only allows you to exit at Ha Tien, no other border point in Vietnam.
At Cambodian side of border there are a few private vehicles that will take you to Kep/Kampot. No public transport. Could also get a local motorbike taxi.

6There are travel agencies on Phu Quoc island with whom you can book a trip to Kep/Kampot. They will organise your ticket for the ferry, minivan to the border crossing at Ha Tien then pick you up at the other side and drive you the rest of the way. I did it that way last April. I already had multi entry Vietnam and Cambodian visas so that part wasn't an issue. Some other people that I was sharing the minivan to Phu Quoc with did not have a Vietnam visa and that wasn't a problem for Phu Quoc (although they may have paid a $5 fee for processing. Not sure about that bit). Be warned that the border officials were also trying to stick travellers with a bogus $1 charge for 'health check' at the border crossing. Sorry but I can't remember how much the cost was for the whole trip fom Phu Quoc to Kep.

7The $5 fee, is it just a scam by the Vietnamese?
There's no reason to pay much to go to Kep. If you were in Kampot you would be able to find someone to take you to Kep for $5. And Kampot and the border are similar distances from Kep.

8The $5 fee which I referred to in my post was a border fee which allows access to the special economic zone of Ha Tien/Phu Quoc in lieu of a Vietnamese visa.

9I'll try to answer most of the points raised here. The 15 day entry stamp to Vietnam issued at the Prek Chak/Xa Xia crossing (Kep-Ha Tien) should technically be free (or certainly it was when first started over a year ago). However it seems that now people wanting this entry stamp are being charged 5 USD per person.Although there is no clear guidance on whether this stamp permits you to travel to Phu Quoc island, many people do so.The Vietnamese Immigration authorities are quite well aware of this, and as far as I know, have never stopped anyone from doing it,nor have there ever been any repercussions if you do.Re #1 this is certainly available for Australians.Whilst it would certainly be possible to travel further into Vietnam with only this stamp, that is NOT allowed, and if you were found to have done so,then you might be in trouble.I certainly don't recommend it.I would think that the total cost for the trip from PQ to Kep,including pick-up at hotel should be around 20 USD.A motorcycle from the border to Kep should be around 5USD.A minibus ticket from Ha Tien to Kampot is around 12 USD,this is a through trip, including passage through the border

11The 15 day "Special Economic Zone" Visa is NOT now available. It was discontinued a few weeks ago. While there is speculation it may be re-introduced,currently anyone wishing to travel to Ha Tien/Phu Quoc needs a visa for Vietnam just as you do for everywhere else in Vietnam.I will update this thread if and when the situation changes
