Johannesburg Safety
I'm going to Johannesburg at the end of the week and am wondering about taxi's and general safety. I have to get to my hotel which is about 30 minutes from the airport (Holiday Inn Sandton). Are taxi's pretty reliable and safe in Johannesburg? Should I worry about them overcharging me? Is there a better way that someone would recommend getting to my hotel? The tour group we are going with offers transportation however its $85 per person which is pretty expensive so we are looking at other options. Thanks

Taxis are relatively expensive in Johannesburg. From the airport the Gautrain (runs until about 8pm) goes directly to Sandton Station, from where (if it's still daytime) you can safely walk to the Holiday Inn in about 5-10 minutes, or perhaps take the Gautrain feeder bus a few stops for a few rand extra.Info: http://join.gautrain.co.za. At the airport just go up to the station (between terminal 1 and 2) and there's friendly people who will help you get the travel card.

^^ >Travel Security briefing from a reputable companyJeez, it's not a war zone. Tourists who really require this service for a place like Johannesburg should reconsider leaving their house.
Take the train, talk to locals, don't be an idiot, smile, and you'll most probably have a great time.
