Air BnB

Hello, I am looking to travel to Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Turkey mid 2013 and I heard about the Air BnB website - has anyone used this website to book accommodation? I was unsure if it was the real deal or could it be a scam? Thanks in advance.

I have not used them, but i did come across their web site some time ago and it seems they have been around for a few years.

Yes,it's the real deal.If you make use of the search facility at top right hand side you'll find plenty of posts from travellers who have used airbnb and had very positive experiences.

Air BnB does get mixed reviews, but then - what/who doesn't?

I've used it and had only good experiences but as you'd expect with the wide range of properties and people involved, there is the potential for mixed experiences. Read the reviews and make sure you know what you are getting - is it a room, the whole place etc. In the less expensive places (ie not Austria) short term apartments off standard commercial apartment letting websites are often not all that expensive although of course you miss the personal touch you can get letting with someone who actually lives in the place.

We have used airbnb very successfully along with other sources for apartments in 6 or 8 countries. One has to be very careful to look at each and every photo. If you do not see a TV room/living room- then they probably do not have one. Look at the counter in the kitchen- is there a microwave, an oven? What do you NEED to make an apartment fit your family? We like an outdoor space, washing machine, microwave, and satelite TV- if we do not find those things listed in the description -then we move along. Also look for a owner who is very descriptive. Those are my thoughts!!

I've used Airbnb quite a bit recently in Europe and it seems to always work out. Just read the reviews of travelers before you to make sure the place is clean, and confirm the price and accommodations with your host before you arrive, to make sure you're getting what you expect. If you need certain things (TV, internet, a fridge, washing machine, etc.) make you sure you check whether those will actually be there before you show up. Also always confirm the price with your host because about 80% of the time I try to book a room or an apartment they want more money than was listed on the website, or there are hidden fees like early/late check-in, extra cleaning fees etc. Also, if you have any issues with your room you have to call Airbnb (the number will be on you reservation) WITHIN 24 hours of your check in time or else there's very little they can do to help you because 24 hours after you check in they release the money to your host.
