Sierra Leone Budget solo traveler??Hey all. So i've looked around for an estimate on a daily budget in Sierra Leone. Would I be able to stay in an average hotel or hostel, drink some beers and go to the clubs, and eat like a local for $50/Day? Also, how is it traveling alone in Sierra Leone? Is it easy to make local friends and/or meet other travelers? Im thinking about going there for the month of January. including New Year. I've secluded my travels to Latin America over the past 2 years, Im ready to see West Africa!! Thanks for any words of advice!

1You can easily get by on $50 a day. If you're not particular abou your accomodation you can sleep for around $10 a night as long as you're not at the beach. If you want something closer to western standards it will cost $20 and up. If you eat like a local, which is rice and sauce, each meal will be less than a dollar. Overland transport is also relatively inexpensive. Roughly $2 an hour. Beer is about a dollar a bottle at low end places and can get a little pricey, but still affordable, at higher end places and clubs. Local packets of booze are dirt cheap.
Will it be easy to meet local friends? YES!!!. People are extremely friendly. Will it be easy to meet other travelers? Probably not.

3Thanks so much for the replies. I really really want to go back to Africa. I was in Eritrea for a few days, but i was in the military so didnt really get away from the other sailors, kind of missed the culture :( I want to get back and get in the mix of it all!!

4Totally agreed with what Mozad said.
Though just for the record: Transportation could be quite expensive in the more remote parts of the country where public transport is not available and that you have to rely on hiring a poda-poda or a private fishing boat to some of the islands. Though in the end - that depends on your bargaining skills as well.
Making local friends will be really easy - most of the time you will probably most likely walk into foreign workers (NGO types) rather than travellers.
Safe travel, and enjoy Sierra Leone! :)
