cheap flight cancun- then where?Found cheap flights to Cancun- & looking for suggestions.
Traveling w/ 2 sons (20 & 24). - ten days/ usually do buses, but could rent car
Looking to find a good place for home base/ preferably rent house on beach
Do not need anything fancy- butkitchen nice
Snorkeling/ diving/ fishing would be great
Looked into xcalak- but think might be TOO isolated for sons- plus few rentals
think sons would like someplace with a couple of bars anyway- but none of us want high risers on the beach
SO- any suggestions for ten days with sons in Yucatan?
(Husband and I spent month many years ago & liked Merida/ Tulum- but Tulum looks too built up & too expensive these days- for us, I think.)

2Okay, a more serious answer. The top two replies you'll usually get here are Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres. I've taken the second option a couple of times, it's got all of what you're asking for. No need for a car, but you might rent a golf cart.
I think you'll find hundreds of good answers for those questions you didn't ask in that list above though!

I visited Tulum again last December, and didn't find it too built up or expensive; I didn't see any highrises, and my budget was approx 25 USD per day. If you're going to rent a car, you also have the option of renting a place in the town and commuting to the beach, or consider renting bikes for transportation.

7I would rule out Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres. Have you thought of the Soloman Bay area? Some nice rentals there and while not a lot of entertainment , dining options there, you have Tulum nearby on the south and more options to the north. To me, only a good option if you have a car.

10If you really think Tulum is too built up then you either need to go to the Gulf coast where the water is not as nice or head down south. Mahahaul, Xcalak and Punta Alen are really the only spots on the ocean.
Personally I do not find Tulum to be "built up" but then I live just 15 km north in the jungle. The beach certainly has a lot of small hotels along the entire thing and you will not find anything cheap this time of year. You can stay in the town and things drop a lot in price. Any place between Tulum and Cancun will be pricey if you want the beach. If you can handle staying on the "jungle" side of the road PM me and I can give you some ideas, might need a car or will need to take collectivos.
