India 3-4 week itinerary

Hi all
Long time, first time so thanks in advance for your help.

My gf and I are flying into Delhi on 28 December which is our first visit to India however we've travelled quite a bit through other parts of SE Asia.

Can someone help us with the early drafts of our plan at the moment? The only commitment we have is to be in the Maldives on 24 Jan so we are either thinking a straight up month in India or if we find we need some space to breathe to make it 3 weeks India and a week in Sri Lanka.

Therefore we're attacking it in 2 parts. Part A - Rajasthan and Varanasi. Part B - Southern India or Sri Lanka

PART A
Delhi (2-3 nights) - overnight train to Varanasi (3-4 nights) - train to Agra (1 night) - Jaipur (3 nights) - Jodhpur (3 nights) - udaipur (2 nights)

This would be approx 18 days with travel with the only other consideration being a side trip to Jaisalmer for a few days so lets call it an even three weeks. The only absolute musts for us out of the above is Varanasi and Agra so if there is something else enroute we shouldn't miss or something else we should take out altogether I'd love to hear your thoughts.

PART B
This is where the option would be to either duck away to Sri Lanka on the way to Maldives or head south. If the latter the thoughts would then be to make our way to Mumbai (3 nights) and then either choose one of Goa or go further to Kerala (4 nights either) where we could fly from Trivi or Cochin to Male.

Would it be too naive to think we could decide this as we go? The reason I ask is if the intensity of India gets to us after Rajasthan then we'd like the flexibility of seeing a bit of SL on the way to Maldives.

General Queries : -

  • Particularly with Part A is it worthwhile hiring a driver for the Rajasthan section to keep a bit of flexibility given its peak season and the need to book trains in advance?
  • Are there any NYE celebrations in Varanasi or should we stick to Delhi?
  • Overall does any of the above seem too rushed or overkill in any areas? Is there any glaring omissions from a first time visitor? Ie Hampi?

I thinks that's it for now. Really appreciate any general thoughts. I've loved reading these forums and appreciate the goodwill of those that give their worldly advice to guidance demanding people like myself so please be kind!!

Regarding Part A:

Do it this way:

Delhi - Agra - Varanasi

Delhi - Agra is 2 Hours by Sped Train(Shatabdi)

Then Agra - Varanasi is Over Night Journey.

On the other hand , if you are a Party freak..

then Head Straight to Goa on 28 th December for 4 Nights (New Year Celebrations)

Then Plan some thing near by in South like Karnataka and Kerela then Sri Lanka.

Then i assure you take your flight back to maldives from Delhi? , If yes you can spencd last 4 days visiting Agra and varanasi.

here is the Plan

28 Dec - reach Goa - 5 Nights

3 rd Jan - 15 Jan - Kerela

15 Jan - 20 Jan Karnataka - Places Like Mysore Hampi and Chikmaglur Many(Google it) - this has to be mostly by a Hired Cab.

Take Back Flight from bangalore - Delhi/ Varanasi

Then Varanasi - 3 Nights and then Last night in Agra

Reach New Delhi - 23 Jan :)

Hi,

Kudos for your excellent planning. But here are some additions and tips for you:

1. Visit Agra ( for Tajmahal and Agra Fort ) from delhi. you can take a train from new delhi station to Agra Cantt.
2. from Agra you can go to either Varanasi or go to jaipur ( to cover Rajasthan)

3. If you love to party, go to Goa by air ( since time is short) for New Year Celebrations.

4. Down South, you can go to Kerela ( backwaters are famous) via chennai.

Thanks Richie, appreciate your thoughts.

We haven't booked a flight out of India to Maldives yet and our original thoughts were either Trivivandrum if not going to Sri Lanka or Colombo if choosing SL.

Is 12 days in Kerala a bit too much, at the expense of other parts of Rajasthan (ie Jaipur, udaipur, Jodhpur etc)? We have varied interests including beaches, diving, culture, food, ruins etc so it shouldn't favor one particular area.

Thanks so much

Agreed, However dividing kerela and rajasthan would be injustice to Both :)(everyone will have there own point of Views) - let any other member comment

kerela

Places to See:Cochin , Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Munnar, Allapey,Thrissur and wayanad

Rajasthan : Lot of information available in google best will be :

Jaipur - Spend a Day in Choki dhani(http://www.chokhidhani.com/), Jaiselmer, Udaipur , Jodhpur and many more

Thanks Travelb really appreciate it. We're not mad for a huge party on NYE but more just want to make sure there is at least something semi decent for a drink past midnight. So if there is something going on in Delhi/Agra that would suffice and will stop us backtracking and enable us to just do a sort of vertical line down South on the way to Maldives.

Do you think Rajasthan, Varanasi, Mumbai, Goa and Kerala is feasible in 4 weeks maybe with an internal flight or two? Is 3 weeks completely mad? Would love to check out Sri Lanka but it may have to be a separate trip.

Delhi will have bars open for sure, Agra, you will probably need to find a high end hotel with a bar.

I think you have too long in Jodhpur to be honest, I would add an overnight in Kumbalgarh and also check out Ranakpur...it's between Jodhpur and Udaipur.
