Shipping bike from Canada to New Zealand: how to?
Hey,Air Canada Cargo is quoting me $825 CAD to ship a 35kg load (1 bike box + 2 boxes of related gear) from YYT to AKL. I have never used air freight before and have heard that many air cargo companies refuse to deal with individuals, forcing them instead to rely on freight forwarders who will slap a fat markup on the actual airfare... Is that true? Will I have to pose as an agent for a bogus company in order to ship my stuff? Any advice from someone who has actually done this would be appreciated.
As for sea freight: I have found ONE company operating in Halifax who is willing to handle "personal goods" -- all other sea freight companies have slammed the door in my face.... I'm still waiting for the quote, though, and I gather that a bicycle may be handled even more roughly on a ship than in an airplane.
Any ideas/suggestions?

Emirates as well allow 32KG but would be the long way round, via Toronto.Lanka airways is another 32kg airline. Great for bikes.

I met a German guy who used the post to get his bike home from NZ. Turkeylegs also posted here about using the post from China to Ireland. Very cheap!.Tukeylegs got away with sending the bike almost whole, whereas the German completely stripped it down to make it fit in 2 legal packages.
If you can't strip yourself, you could pay for LBS at either end and it would still be cheaper.

Hi. I have shipped all my possessions in the past from Australia to the UK (including a bike). Its by sea so took about 6 weeks but no hassles, good reliable company, and no damage or problems at all. I would recommend them if you don't mind the wait. Good value too. You don't mention if it is for a tour or not so you may need air cargo if it is.http://www.sevenseasworldwide.com/

Is flying with your bike not an option? I'm pretty sure Air Canada charges $50 for a bicycle one way.
