If you fly, there is no airstrip in Hopkins, so you would fly to Dangriga and then continue by bus or taxi. Bus service is not frequent and a taxi might be in the order of BZ$100(?).A car rental gives more freedom without relying on buses, plus a car would be better to explore the region. The downside is a long drive from Belize City, but slow down and enjoy the trip.

It is easy and safe to drive to Hopkins (I assume from the international airport?), but make sure you complete your trip before dark. The roads have almost no painted lines and are poorly lit, sometimes not at all. The turn offs are all plainly marked. I would fly because I prefer the 18 minute flight + 30 minute taxi ride ($80BZ is the current rate, but you can haggle) over the (scenic) 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive. If you do have a medical emergency, there is a clinic in Hopkins or you can take a taxi to the hospital in Dangriga (that trip may cost you $100BZ). A car would be better with a child if you want to explore out of the village as the public buses are hot, noisy and slow. You can also use tour guides to explore and save all the hassle.3
Hi,I rented a small SUV and drove all over Belize in 2 weeks,
Only way to go.
Make sure you book for the following night,
I did not and suffered for it!
Tour bus shows up and all the rooms are gone!
