Best option for a Boat or Cruise in Patagonia

Hi all,

I'm planning around 10-12 days in Southern Patagonia in Jan or Feb of next year, and as part of the itinerary am considering doing between 3 and 5 days on a cruise.

Just hoping for opinions on which cruise has more spectacular scenery of either.:

a) Puerto Montt to Puerto Natalas; or

b) Ushuaia/Puerto Williams to Punta Areans

I have researched all my itinerary options and company/pricing options of the cruises, so not after which makes more logistical sense, just after opinions on which area provides more spectacular sceneray (obviously subjective, but from your opinions).

Keep in mind, that I will also be visiting TDP and El Calafate as part of the route, so if the scenery of one cruise area is more like either of these hiking areas, then that will sway my opinions.

Thanks,
Tom

I guess you are looking at the Navimag vs the Australis. The Navimag is basically a cargo ship with added infrastructure for taking passengers. It is fairly basic but fine. As with anything in the region, weather plays a big part in your enjoyment. The Australis cruises are comfortable passenger vessels and the trips are expensive but well worth it. Obviously much longer than the Navimag trip. There is a big difference in the price so it depends on your time and budget. Maybe read a few reviews?

I know we will be paying a lot more for the second option, but that may be ok if the scenery is going to be worth it. Considering I have already spent over two weeks in the lakes region of chile, plus we will be going to TDP, I thought that maybe the trip between these two places would be more of what I have already seen.

However, if they are both going to be completely different to TDP and the lakes region, and equally as spectacular then cheap definitly takes priority over comfort.

Thatnks for the feedback

They are sort of different experiences. The Australis cruises have two excursions a day when weather permits and there are guides and talks. The Navimag is moving from A to B, just stopping to offload cargo. Provided the weather is clear you get some wonderful views, nothing like the lake district and not really like TdP either.
