My 3 week SE Asia Trip

I'm flying from NYC to Hanoi .

10 hour layover in Hong Kong- Gonna try to at least check out Victoria Harbour and a few things.

12/18-Spend the night in Hanoi.

12/19-Transport to Halong Bay

12/20-Sleeper-Train from Hanoi to Danang, then head to Hoi An for a day.

12/22-Sleeper-Train to Saigon...Possibly stop in Mui Ne for some kitesurfing??

12/24-Train/Bus to Phnom Penh

12/26-Speedboat to Siem Reap

12/28-Bus to Battambang

12/29-Bus to Bangkok

12/31-Flight to Surat Thani, then bus/boat to Koh Samui, the Full Moon Party in Koh Phagan

1/2-Bus/Boat to Phuket

1/6-Flight to Bangkok

1/8-Flight to NYC

I know it's rushed! But that's the way I have been accustomed to traveling. I enjoy a fast pace and covering a lot of ground. I can always come back again if I want to revisit any of the places I didn't get to spend enough time at.

The only part of this itinerary that is confirmed are the flights.

Are there any places I CAN'T afford to miss along the way?

Are they any places that I CAN afford to miss??

Any and ALL advice or recommendations would be highly appreciated!!

You can cut out Battambang and Bangkok. Prob. leave speedboat out and take the bus. Only 1 day at Siem Reap? It is pretty mad, to spend nearly everyday travelling. So are basically doing HAlong BAy, Hoi An, HCMC, PP, SR, BTG in 10 days.

Nooooooooo dont cut me out

But yeah it is true actually. There's no point to go just for one night, better to take that extra day and spend it in Siam Reap, you can buy the 3 day Angkor wat pass, you need at least that much time for it anyway, there are so many temples plus its a nice town.
It's a very rushed schedule, for vietnam it would probably be better to fly part of the way, like Hanoi- Danang, or Hanoi- Nha trang, or Hue - HCMC just to save time, the flights are cheap.

Thanks for the info guys!

What about a day trip to Battambang to shoot machine guns/rocket launchers for a few hours? Can you recommend any good links or info for those activities?
,
I figured any place that I can roam around all day or for at least 10 hours, is most of what I need to see. Like I said I will come back and revisit the places I love one day. I'm young and fit, so don't need much rest.

After doing a bit more research, flights seem more practical for these routes:

-Hanoi to Danang

-Danang to HCMC

-Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

-Siem Reap to Bangkok

It should cost roughly $200 more but take maybe 20 hours off my travel time??..which would be very necessary with this itinerary...

Thoughts?

You just don't have enough time there.

Last year we did 3 weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia

3 days Siem Reap
1 night Banteay Chhmar homestay
3 nights Phnom Penh
2 nights HCMC
2 nights Hoi An
1 night homestay on 2 day bike trip from Hoi An to Hue
1 night Hue
Sapa Trip, Halong Bay trip and a couple of nights Hanoi

Hanoi is really nice, that doesn't give you any time in that city.

We contemplated squishing Bangkok in last year on our trip and decided against it, I think you should too.

I think just do the 2 countries and you'll have a much better balanced trip

P.S the Cu Chi tunnels trip from Saigon is really interesting, and you can shoot guns!

I'm sure all those places are amazing and I could spend a week in each town, but like I said I'm accustomed to this way of traveling.

I will def look into the Cu Chi tunnels. Thanks for the tip!

By the way, don't expect too much from the gun shooting.

At the Cu Chi tunnels they have the famous automat kalaschnikow and some M16 and M60 (mainly German MG42).

You pay 1 US$ per shot, which is OK, compared for the price I have to pay for a 6,5x55 this is still cheap. But if you use the M60, you need at least 50 shots to get some impression. But even then the guns are havily mounted on the range, so no real feedback from the gun.

Imho just a waste of money and ammunition. Go to your local shooting range, that is more fun.

You dont need to fly from Phnom pehn to Siem Reap, its only a 4 hour bus ride.
Although its not a good way to go from Siem Reap to bangkok as well as the routes you mentioned in vietnam
Also a few weeks ago i saw a cheap flight on Tiger airways from Phnom pehn to Phuket or Hat yai, that might be a better way to go - backtracking to phnom pehn instead of through bangkok.

Those tiger airways prices from PP cost more than Siem Reap to BKK..

Ok that promotion is probably done now, and the flights I was finding had just a 1 hour layover. OR could be they sold out

UPDATE:

I have just booked the following flights:

-PP to SR

-SR to BK

-BK to Surat Thani

-Phuket to BK

Now I have some serious decisions to make in Vietnam, either:

-Hanoi to Danang, then Danang to HCMC

-Hanoi to Nha Trang, then Nha Trang to HCMC

OR due to limited time:

-Hanoi to HCMC

Jetstar and VietJet seem to best options, with VJ roughly $10-15 cheaper

Would love some input/advice/recommendations on this! Trying to lock it up!!

I loved Hoi An best of all in VN, so I would fly to Da Nang.
