A bunch of silly questions.
My train reservation from Wellington to National Park says- IC7002 Wellngton Central to Bulls and IC 6412 Bulls to National Park What does this mean? Do I have to just change coaches? Or Is Bulls a different station?
- I haven't made a booking for travelling from Rotorua to Auckland. Can one just show up at the bus station, buy a ticket and hop in? Or must I book in advance?
- Is there a train connection between Rotorua and Auckland? Or are buses the only option? (Air travel is out as too expensive)

The 7002 refers to the Wgtn station, the 6412 to the Bulls station. It depends on how busy they are re the booking in advance. I would advise booking ahead on a Fri night for example. In advance is usually cheaper.
Buses only from Rotorua.

You can show up at Rotorua (Tourist Information Center) and there is a very good chance you can get a seat. However, often it's cheaper to book online. Check with nakedbus as they usually have good deals, if you book ahead. There aren't any train connection between Rotorua and Auckland, you are pretty much limited to bus.4
Palmerston North then? Or maybe the OP is on the bus rather than the train?5
Soul - did you decide to travel by Bus to National Park? The 'IC' Prefix is a bus line (Intercity buses).
Bulls is the name of the town where you change buses.
Looking at the Intercity booking I can see this means you get Bus #IC7002 from Wellington Railway Station. This is a Wellington to Auckland bus but you get off the bus at Bulls.
At Bulls you then get another bus - IC6412 which is a Palmerston North to Auckland bus. This bus goes via National Park.
The bus driver has a list of who is getting off and at what stop. They are usually pretty good at letting you know so dont worry about getting left on the bus!
In Rotorua it's better to buy a ticket in advance, if anything so you can (1) get a cheaper ticket and (2) get to choose the service you want (rather than just taking what you can). But you definitely wouldn't need to book it a week in advance. Personally, I'd just book it a day or two in advance :)

muppet! No, intercity is the bus. The train runs on alternate days. You need to leave on Saturday right? Then it's the bus you must go by. FYI - I think the bus is a really nice trip, personally. It's not a particularly long trip and the bus gives you a really nice perspective. You get to stop, you get to look out the big big windows.
Don't worry - it's a lovely trip.

The bus is fine. I travelled all around NZ on Intercity and they were great. As others said the IC7002 and IC6412 are just the bus service numbers. It is a really nice journey. You won't miss Bulls, there are pictures of bulls everywhere and every shop has Bulls in the name in some comedy fashion (Even the bank does if I remember correctly).11
Hey SC, I've emailed you...but the bus from Rotorua is cheaper if you book in advance.
there is another option which I'll email you about as well actually.
