EBC (land in KTM 25th Oct)

Hi all I'm currently travelling in India and will arrive in KTM on 25th October. I plan to get my Tims card that day and hopefully catch a flight to Lukla the next day and start a trek up to EBC. I was wondering is there anyone else in the region who fancied either comig along or allowing me to join their group? I'm a 24 yr old male from London.

Hi James

Getting a seat on a Lukla flight the next day might be difficult; probably best to book a seat in advance.

I think the 25th is Dashain, and so the TIMS office might be closed. If so, it's possible (or at least it was last year) to get your TIMS at the National Park entry point (between Lukla and Namche).

Thanks for the advice guys, do you know how I could book the flights in advance? I've been trawling the net and I can't seem to find any websites selling tickets for KTM to lukla ?

Hi James

Flights can be booked directly with some of the airlines via the internet - sitaair.com.np is an example (can't remember who else flies this route). They don't seem to have secure payment systems and card details might be sent via email.

Alternatively, a trekking agent might reserve the flight for and accept payment when you arrive but probably only if you are using them for other services (guides, flights elsewhere Chitwan package for example.

Good advice above - Oct will be very busy, and flights at Lukla often get badly disrupted by the weather in Oct and into Nov, so I think you'll just have to take pot luck - even when people have booked flights, I have heard numerous stories about people not getting on planes, as guides bribe airline staff, call in favours or the general system becomes chaotic. Many times the police and even army have been used at Lukla to keep order.

This does though mean that there will be a very good chance that you can meet up with other independent trekkers at Lukla (when you get there). Do also allow for possible delays at Lukla when you fly out, though generally the situation improves from say mid Nov, as there is less weather risk.
