Not convinced about Langkawi?Hey people,
I'm spending 12 days in peninsula Malaysia over December - january. For a long time I have had an obsession with Langkawi as it just looks amazing. But the more I read up on it I'm just not sure how much time to spend there, or whether I should go at all. Im 33, a solo girl and just want to chill out at a nice beach and go to a spa or 2. I'm open to meeting other solos or small groups to explore the island or eat out, but understand Langkawi isn't the place for a raging night out.
I don't want to be surrounded only by couples or families, and I don't want pay more than $AU100 (MYR300) per night for a private room but I still want to stay in walking or easy bus distance of beach/spa/places to eat.
I will be in Penang before Langkawi, so am already up that way.
Does anyone have suggestions re where to stay, or which area would suit me?
Thanks & cheers

1I hear you...I was traveling solo up through Malaysia last Nov and took the boat from Penang to Langkawi. I met a couple of people on the boat so ended up hanging with them in Pantai Cenang, but the vibe in general was a little lacking in my opinion...only stayed 3 nights. If it's not to your liking, a good option is to take the ferry from Langkawi to Ko Lipe in the Tarutao archipelago in Thailand. It's a great little island...no vehicles, good food, cool little bars, decent crowd, Thai massage etc...very cheap! I ended up staying for 2 weeks in a 300 Baht/night bunglow right on the beach!! In January it might cost you 500 Baht.

2Langkawi in Dec/Jan could be packed. It's school holidays in Msia and Msians will be using up their annual leave, plus the fact it is monsoon on east side, so everyone heads to west side i.e. Langkawi and Penang. So you might be surrounded by families.
RM300 is a lot and will get you a nice room.

4Good advice thanks guys.
Is there anywhere else on the west coast between Penang and Melaka you'd recommend? I'm already seeing penang, kl and melaka, maybe I just spend more time there? I intend on exploring a lot of food/cooking schools in these places.

5If you don't want to go all the way up to Thailand (I know you haven't got a lot of time) then there isn't a better bet than Langkawi.
I agree with above that it isn't great for a solo traveller..it will be full of families at that time of year too.East Coast would be a better bet but not in January.

9Thanks everyone for your input. At most I will be in langkawi 2 days, but I might steal those days back for the other 3 towns.
Such a shame January is monsoon season for the east coast!! Perhentiens and tioman both sound unreal :(

10try the other side of malaysia, go to pulau tioman.
there is a cosy small "hostel" called "beach shack"
you can contact the owners e.g. via facebook : https://www.facebook.com/beachshack.tioman?fref=ts
it is really cheap, absolutely silent, no families und less couples.

11Only problem with Tioman is that in December/January it will probably be raining every day.........
