Essaouira - does it warrant an overnight stay?

Hi we've got 2.5 weeks travelling around Morocco and we finish up in Marrakesh, we want to visit the coast and were wondering if a day trip is enough or does Essaouira deserve an overnight stay?

See it takes 3 hours by bus from Marrakesh which means we'd only get approx 7 hours there if we took the 1st and last bus there and back.

Many thanks!

Definitely, even if you go in the winter so it is worth to stay over at least one night.

"does Essaouira deserve an overnight stay?"
Certainly, especially since you have 2.5 weeks in Morocco.
I've also done it by day trip, and it makes a LONG day.

I'm in Essaouria right now and very glad that I'm staying for 2 days and nights. It has a lovely, relaxed ambience. However I may be ever so slightly biased as I've just finished 3 days/4 nights trekking with camels out from M''Hamid and was thus feeling in need of sea breezes and seafood.

Do you mean that you rode camel 4 days, sitting on the camel all days? Or do you mean the trip in 4 days from ... to Erg Chigaga by car and there rode camel some hour only?

Husband and I left M'Hamid on day one accompanied by 2 guides and 3 camels. Each day we walked about 5 hours - on day 2 I rode one of the camels for just over an hour as I was feeling a little weary. Each day had its physical demands and we were glad to get to the camp at Erg Chigaga on day 4. Looking very dirty and dishevelled we did share the evening with those who had taken the more comfortable route of a 4 wheel drive.

The desert trek was a magical experience. We have done a lot of trekking in various parts of the world - Andes, Himalayas, east Africa etc etc, but the intensity of our rather short 4 day desert trek was certainly memorable. Nice trekking for several days with the camels, the berber guides and meeting nomads en route. According to our GPS we covered over 55 kms over the 4 days. The terrain was demanding on occasion - particularly what are called gibber plains in
Australia plus the soft sand of the dunes. The harder baked sand was easier going.

Highly recommend it!

It must be certainly a memorable experience, 4 days on the camel in the desert and live as nomad :). Enviable. You are the first here who did such trip, other (including me ha ha) did that by 4x4.

Makes me worn out and sore just reading about it! Wow! I will stick to car travel.
