there are really very few beaches in costa rica that are "close to white powder." unlike beaches that originate from coral reefs, most of the beaches in costa rica are volcanic in origin and so tend to be tan, gray, or black - and various shades of these colors.

the beaches south of puerto viejo on the caribbean coast or cahuita, north of puerto viejo, probably come the closest. http://www.puertoviejosatellite.com

No white beaches in CR-

Lightest sand is in Playa Conchal near Playa Tamarindo.

Nice Pacific beaches are Samara, Nosora, Mal Pais

Best beaches IMO are Playa Cocles, Chequita and Punta Uva, and the beaches in the Manzanillo-Gonduca marine refuge, need to hike or kayak too...

Best sand I have found thats is white powdery is Siesta Key Florida, and Seaside Florida areas.

Roatan Bay Islands Honduras is very nice too.

actually, playa conchal is a beautiful beach - but - it is almost all broken shells and not powdery sand.

Conch has plenty fine sand w, the shelly stuff nearest the first (on right) spot going in, near the reef. That beach is isolated for rough footsie and actually pretty cool bc the reef snorkels well.
As you travel only yards onward it can be remarkably soft sand more so the further you go. A trail beginning @ conchal going to grande and pirate bay just in from the water has nothing but fine sand in certain areas.

i've been to conchal several times, which is a curved bay, essentially. i have never walked to the far end of the beach (the end furthest from brasilito) so it might be powdery sand there. there is some soft sand at the edge of the water - but also shells. (it's not called "conchal" for nothing)

at the end of that part of the beach is punta sabana - a rocky point and i'm not sure just how you would traverse this. it might be that you can walk around it on the sand at low tide. beyond that is playa nombre de jesus -- playa grande is quite a bit further and not something that can be gotten to by an hour-long stroll along the beach, for sure.

cleat - what is the "pirate bay" you speak of? er, write about....
