Moving To Mexico Near San DiegoHi.
So I am currently in San Diego and am seriously considering moving to some city/town in Mexico within 2 hours of San Diego. I am looking into Tijuna, Ensenada and Rosarito and am wondering if any folk here have some info on this.
I recieve $900/month in social security and am looking for a relatively quiet location to live in. I would assume that TIjuna can be pretty loco at times but a friend of mine lives there and says he loves it.
Do any folks here live in one of those three places?
Well that is probably enough to get a discussion started.

3Nothing wrong with asking here, and there probably are a few people who can answer your question, but most of the people who live in Baja and commute to California don't show up on this forum very often. MexConnect.com's forums would have more information on living in that area, as well as the various Baja sites (none of which I'm familiar with).

4I met an American ex-pat a couple of years ago while we were both visiting Zacatecas, and he told me he lived in San Felipe, on the east coast of the Baja, not too far from San Diego. He was also on a budget like you, and said he enjoyed living there. But he did say it got too hot in the summer there, so he would travel around Latin America, to mostly mountainous places, to stay cool.

5For starters, you could look for places to rent on Craigslist. http://tijuana.es.craigslist.com.mx/

9So the OP here...
As I give this move more thought I am gaining some clarity.
Ideally I am looking for a city-town one to two hours from San Diego that is fairly rural. I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it is important for me to be in fairly peacerful settings.
Initially I was planning to move back to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala (I lived there three years ago for a few months) but it is really too far from the US. However, in many other respects it is ideal. It is quiet and by a beautfiul lake and has a large number of ex-pats folks along with an indigenous community.
Are there Mexcian locations that are at all similar to what I am describing in Guatemala?

10"In Mexico, nothing beats seeing a rental in person!"
So, where in the world doesn't this wisdom apply?

11Lago Atitlan is one of the places I'd go myself, under similar circumstances. It will be interesting to see if anyone has found comparable weather, and peace and quiet anywhere in Mexico.

So this is an interesting challenge...to see if there is a place relatively close to the US border that compares to the beauty, low cost and tranquility of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.
So far Lake Atitlan still seems unique.
I did a bit of research regarding Lake Zirahuen and it is certainly quite intriguing. It has the beauty and the tranquility indeed. However, if is not really that close to the border. In addition, the info said that there are only 10-15 gringo ex-pats living there. This means that I would really need to be capable of building good relations with the Mexican locals and my Spanish is not all that good. I am totally interested in improving my Spanish but I do have a major disability and it has a profound impact on my ability to concentrate for long periods of time. As a result learning a language as a big challenge.
The MexConnect info on Lake Zirahuen mentioned rooms for tourists that go for around $60 a night. That is way way over my budget. So at least initially Zirahuen does not seem affordable to me.
If others have information that I was not able to find that would be great.
