Small towns in Ireland (winter)

Inland you might try Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan - nice people, great walking tours and history.I also enjoyed Ennis, Co Clare. Great old abbey and lots of shops, good food and people.

Why on earth anyone would consider Doolin in January (or any other time) is beyond me especially as the post says not sea side? There are towns in Clare worth considering? Ennis (although not a small village or particularly scenic) would be high on the list especially if you do not have a car. For scenic how about round Lough Derg in the centre of the country, Killaloe, Mountshannon, on the west bank and many more all the way around. For rural Ireland you will find you need a car though.5
Cahir and Tipperary :) in the central part of Ireland, small but with some interesting sights :)And you can also reach them by bus :)
but I agree with tony2phones, if you are looking for villages then you need a car :)

Ireland is definitely a wonderful spot to begin the new year! Here there is something for all tastes: if you are looking for scenic landscapes and genuine tradition, Dingle in Co. Kerry could be a good option. To live the C.S. Lewis dream, choose the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland, the real-life land of Narnia. If you can't wait to experience the real 'Irish craic', the village of Sixmilebridge and the Folk Park at Bunratty Castle in Co. Clare are the places to be on January to join the Shannonside Winter Music Weekend. Happy Irish 2013 in advance! ;)7
I'd suggest, Enniskillen, Sligo, Donegal town or maybe GalwayNot very small towns/cities, but anywhere much smaller would be very quiet indeed
