I am in Malaga Spain in May 2013 for a few days. I'd love to to to Morrocco for a day or two. What can anyone suggest for this. is a day trip do able? would an overnight in Tangier be better. I may never have a chance to get to Morrocco again. I have a couple days in Barcelona, then a weeks time in Malaga. Please suggestions for all of my time in Spain are welcome1
Ferries from Gibraltar to Tangier only run once a week. The company making that route is FRS.Comarit offers one day tours to Tangier (and two days tours too).
You can also make it byyourself if you want. There are frequent ferries from Tarifa to Tangier and from Algeciras to Tangier MED. FRS and Comarit have ferries from Tarifa to Tangier. Ferries out of Algeciras, arrive to Tangier MED a new port that it's far away from downtown Tangier. Take a look at the webs of the ferry companies (FRS, Comarit and Trasmediterránea to get info about schedules and fares.

Forget Gib, take one of the frequent ferries from Algeciras, they are cofortable, fast and you get your passport stamped on board.Many people decry Tangier (notably on the Africa Branch) but for a once-only visit it has plenty of interesting points to excite you. Stay overnight to avoid too much rushing about, although a long day return is possible.
On arrival at he out-of-town port, negotiate a day- or half-day tour with a grand-taxi. Visit the "meeting of the oceans", ride a camel on the beach, visit the sea caves, wander the souk in the Casbah, eat local food, stay in a quiet hotel and awake to the morning prayer call.
Tangier is not the most "traditional" of Moroccan cities (for most of the last century it has been an international meeting place) but my first visit there fired me with enthusiasm and I've returned to Morocco countless times.

What do you expect to gain from a day trip (or 1 night's stay) to Morocco? If you're really interested in seeing the country, you should allow a proper amount of time for it - now or in the future. Otherwise, skip it.5
I'm with Aribo: a 1 day trip from Malaga to ex Spanish Morocco is a huge waste of time and money.In the best case, it could look like this:
Malaga dp by bus 6.45 - Algeciras ar 8.40, dp 11.00 - Ceuta ar 11.55 - taxi to the border - louage to Tetouan ar about 13.30 Spanish time - 14.00 quick lunch - 15.00 visit of the interesting Archeological Museum - 16.30 forget the scenic walk around the labyrinthic lanes - 17.30 louage to the border - 19.00 arrival at Ceuta port, dp 19.30 - Algeciras ar 20.00, dp 21.00 - Malaga ar 24.00

Ferry Tarifa-Tangiers much faster than the one from Algeciras. Also more expensive.Lots of people do day trips, but it must be nuts as #5 above indicates.
There are bus trips available from tourist agencies in Spain --- one or two nights. Could be the easiest way to see part of Morocco but I expect many of them go Algeciras-Ceuta and then cross in Morocco proper to see some sights, mostly likely Tetouan and Chefcheoun.

If you can go for a night or two I would suggest going to Asilah. From Malaga get the bus to Algeciras which takes about two hours and the the bus to Tarifa (or a taxi if you're ot on a tight budget. Then the ferry to Tangiers which takes about an hour, a taxi to the Gare Routiere and a shared taxi to Assilah which takes about two hours I think. Tangiers is hassly, but Assilah is a small seaside place which is nice and chilled. I would also suggest maybe spending a night in Tarifa on route.You can do Tangiers as a day trip but it's an extremely long day. I've known people do it from Marbella which is closer and most people op to do it as an organised tour.

If you are nifty with the buses, Chefchaouen is a better option than Asilah, which I found grubby and dull.Dave

Tetouan is off the beaten track, would be fairly easy for a overnight trip. You take the ferry to Ceuta from Algeciras, then taxi to border, walk across the border, take a taxi 40 minutes to Tetouan.There's a nice riad in Tetouan, although the single accomodations are not that great.
