From Brisbane to Melbourne by car

Hi All,

My family and our friends are going to visit Australia from 27th of Dec 2012 till 8th of Jan 2013. We will arrive to Brisbane Airport, rent cars and drive to Melbourne.
Our itinerary is the following:
28-30DEC - BRISBANE;
30-31DEC - COFFS HARBOUR;
31DEC-3JAN - SYDNEY;
3-5JAN - CANBERRA;
5-6JAN - LAKE ENTRANCE;
6-8JAN MELBOURNE.

This is our first visit to Australia and I'll be very appreciated to receive your suggestions regarding our trip and places that we can visit.

Thank you!

Vladimir

Have you booked accom in Sydney over that time of the year yet?

They go very fast, the last time I checked a few weeks ago, YHA still had spots, but they were dorms, and parking might be a problem, ...

Yeah, not a bad plan. Canberra's probably only worth a day, but on the way here from Sydney you could stop in the southern highlands for a bit (Bowral, berrima) or head down the coast and divert up via Kangaroo Valley.
Then after Canberra heads to the Snowy Mountains - Cooma, and maybe Thredbo, and come down the mountains to Merimbula.
And Dec 31 is the single busiest night of the year in Sydney. Unless you are prepared to pay a fortune, you will be lucky to get a bed anywhere, and those still taking bookings will probably demand minimum stays of 3 or more days, so good luck.

You need to book ALL your accommodation NOW as this is the business time of the year in Oz and all tourist destinations will fill up fast. Most times of the year you could just hire a car and drive and find accom on spec but around Xmas you won't.
You MIGHT be ok in Brisbane and Canberra on spec as they are not popular tourist destinations (more commercial and gov).

Nearly 2000Kms, 4 major cities... Enjoy the view from the car window.

Far too much driving and too little time to cover those distances and enjoy what the places have to offer.
