budget accommodations in Sydney and Melbourne

My partner and i will spend 5 nights in each city in January.
I started looking for accommodations, and nearly flipped out when i saw the prices.
we don't want anything fancy, just a clean room with a private bathroom.
Any recommendations, please?

Hostels or hotels? For the latter try wotif.com Royal Exhibition Hotel near Central Railway is reasonably priced.

I can't speak specifically about the Formule 1 in Melbourne but they are a chain and like McDonald's you get the same at each place. The one's I have stayed at were clean and basic and cheap. They are charging AUD71 a night for some nights in January which I think is a good price for hotel in any large city in the Western World. It is in Elizabeth St so CBD. You could check Sydney for the same, there is one in William St.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, i'll check them out.
I don't really care if it's a hostel or hotel as long as it's clean, and has a private bathroom.
thx

Google " The Nunnery "----accom in Fitzroy---walking distance to the central city----better than a concrete box motel room
