looking for a clean budget guest house in Hong Kong

Hi,

I will be in HK the last week of Dec, 2012. I'm looking for a budget (under $50 US if possible) place to stay in Kowloon - around mongkok / jordan area. Any suggestions? thanks; happy travels.

Dragon Hostel gets ok reviews. Maybe a little more than your budget. If you are not arriving late at night, I'd find somewhere when you get here - that way you can check the cleanliness and price before moving in.

Thanks for the info - it's a good idea to check out the room before taking it. But I'm arriving during Christmas time, is it possible to find a room without pre-booking?
Also, have anyone stayed at the Kakkas GH recently? How is it?

Christmas is not a particularly busy time in Hong Kong. However, if you want to stay in a certain place, it is wise to book in advance. If you are happy to find a place when you get here, then I don't think there is a need to book. In that area of Jordan where Hakkas GH is located, there are other similar places as well.

I stayed at Hollywood Guesthouse. It was clean, and in a good location. A good, decently priced option. http://www.HollywoodGuesthouse.net

Hollywood Guesthouse: A1, 14/F Block A, Chungking Mansion

While Chungking is an excellent location, some would question the wisdom of staying in Chungking, especially Block A.

Folks question the wisdom of staying in Chungking Mansions because it's widely considered a firetrap.

Thanks for the info. I guess Chungking Mansion may ok for 1 night or 2. But I'm staying 4-5 days, I'll look elsewhere. I came across Star GH and Lee Garden, looks like they have the same owner. Anybody stayed there recently?
