River Gambia
Hi,I'm travelling to Gambia with a couple of friends in October and want to do a 2 day expedition on the River Gambia. Does anyone have suggestions of companies/ places to stay? I was interested in the Badi Mayo, but it seems to be no longer contactable.
We're interested in the beach afterward - any ideas of nice beach hotels?
And what is the easiest way to get around? Is it fairly easy to hire a taxi?
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Michelle

Yes: you can always stop a yellow taxi and see if you can cut a deal. Most hotels also have details of car hire options. If you sit in or near reception obviously studying a car hire leaflet, someone will come up to you and suggest a cheaper alternative. If that someone is hotel staff, their suggestion is likely to be more reliable than a random taxi.
For a good beach-side hotel, I recommend the Kairaba.

you could try Tendaba, a few kilometers west of the Trans-Gambian Highway. There's a cheap friendly guesthouse there where you can arrange trips on the river Gambia. The guesthouse is cheap, the trips not so much i'd say, that's what they get their main income from i guess...
But still, it's worth it.

hi,U want to stay in a touristplace, there are many beach hotels. or Bendula Lodge, to stay outside in the countryside but close to the beach (15 min. walk, by foot) there is the wonderful place with small beachbars, long walk to tanje or sanyang for real african live.
hidden gambia and riverexcursion offer rivertripsfrom Tendabacamp to Georgetown.
All the best and greetings to Gambia.

HiDont kmnow if you alreay here or not.
I live in the Gambia, and run a coktail bar in a tourist hotel
www.tripadvisor.com/liv.gambia
it is inside Kombo Beach Hotel in Kotu ( on the Beach)
the tourist season just started a few days ago, but only kicks of properly late October.
Kombo Beach Hotel opens on 12 Oct , but My bar will probably only open on the 19th of October, as I am currently refurbishing my place. a few other hotels open all year long, but some only open Mid to late Oct.
organised trips up the river are rare at the moment, but by 1st of November, they will be a lot to chose from. but you can take private trips, many Bumsters ( unemployed Youth that chase tourists around to make some money off you) and tour Guides will offer you many options. some are good value and some are overpriced
there are many things to do and for any budget, you need to give me more info on what you want to see and do, and your budget, how many people are in your party.
there is green taxis which are called Tourist taxis, and there is Yellow taxis for everyone., obviously the yellow txis are cheaper, and ont let anyone tell you that you are not allowed to use the yellow taxis, you can use anythin you like. even you can use the 12seater minivans that are like mini Busses, that pick and drop off passengers on their way from A to B . ( costing D7 per section = £0.14) you can also take a seat on a yellow taxi sharing for the same price. a private hire of a taxi is cosiderably higher, ranging from D75 ( £1.50) to D 5000 (£100) or more if you are going right across the country)
hotels are also from D200 per nighjt for local hostels, to D2500 (£50) or more per night for tourist hotels.
if you need more info, please feel free tocontact me, for impartial and free advise.
there is also a few couchsurfing hosts that may offer free accomodation for travellers
