Tanzania Islands JanuaryHi,
I am planning a trip with my boyfriend to Tanzania in January. We will arrive in Dar Es Salaam 29th of January and head out to one of the exotic Island. So my question to you guys is where should we go? We will be at the islands for aprox. 1 week before heading inland to see the animals.
We have been looking at Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia Island. And they all seem nice, but we really don't know where to go..
So we would appreciate any tips and reason why we should go to any of the different islands.

1They are all good for a beach vacation. Zanzibar is the most "touristy" (Stonetown is definitely worth a visit though and Zanzibar is only 2.5 - 3.5 hours by ferry from Dar es Salaam; there are at least 5 -7 ferries a day) then Mafia island and then Pemba. I think you have to go to Zanzibar first before going to Pemba. Kendwa in the North of Zanzibar is a good place for a few relaxed days on the beach.

I would strongly recommend Zanzibar first, especially if you haven't been there before. This island had the most activities and lodging options out of the three. It is more populated than the other two islands, but January is not considered the peak season, so it shouldn't be crowded. Stonetown is definitely worth seeing for 1-3 days, or more. You can spend the rest of the time at the beaches on the North or East coasts. Because there are more lodging options, I think you are more likely to find places that fit your needs and budget. It is also easy to get around the island with private hire cars/taxis.
The only reason I would suggest Pemba is if you are a hardcore scuba diver. It is one of the highest rated scuba diving destinations in the world. I would recommend Mafia only if you've been to Zanzibar before and want to try something similar, smaller, and fairly isolated.
