Bugs and the Jungle....

Hi All

I'm heading off to Ecuador in Dec/Jan and have been looking into doing a jungle trip, not sure were yet but most likely Samona or somewhere similar. Now I know this is a really girlie question but I'm really not a huge fan of bugs in my room. I have read that this will more than likely be the case. So my question is..well how bad is it?? Only people who have actually experienced the jungle would be useful and any info on the trips themselves would be fabulous. Actually any info re travelling in Ecudor would be great.

Oh and I have been to S.America many times before so I'm not a novice but admit to being a scaredy cat when it comes to bugs. :)

Thanks

Along the Manabi coast there are several dry tropical jungles. (bosques secos) there you will be able to see about the same tropical fauna and flora , without the bugs and rain and hassles and costs of going into the deep jungle.

good luck

you can get a little insight on Samona lodge by reading the Tripadvisor reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g303844-d1837826-Reviews-Samona_Lodge-Cuyabeno_Sucumbios_Province.html I'll be there in November actually, but I'm quite positive there will be tarantulas, and cockroaches, and an occasional scorpion. Tarantulas are good, they eat the roaches! However all the beds have mosquito netting which keeps the critters off you while you sleep. I wouldn't let a few bugs ruin your adventure though, it is the jungle after all.

i hate the bugs and creepy crawlies too but when we went to the jungle we stayed in a place where there was gauze on the windows so the nasties couldn't get in and if you opened and shut the door quickly you were safe in the room from them.

Recently went to Cuyabeno national park with my girlfriend who is terrified of spiders. We saw spiders (big ones), and other bugs too, but all of them in the forest, the lodge itself was fine and my girlfriend had no problems. We stayed at Guacamayo lodge which was really nice, but I think all lodges along the river are pretty similar.

PS. when we were in the park, 2 tourists were kidnapped for a day or so before being released in the jungle by their captors. The canoe in which they were travelling as part of their tour was assaulted. This was the first time in 15 years tourists were kidnapped in that area according to locals, and they were found quickly and are fine, but do check out security in the area before you go.

i stayed at the somona lodge in the cuyabeno reserve and had a great exprience. the bugs were not really an issue for us at all. there are some, but its not horrible. but be prepared for tranchulas and snakes on the ceiling of the hut that you sleep in... we sure had them in our hut! you have a bug net the surrounds the bed... but i still didnt love the snakes and spiders! have fun!

Just in case anyone takes the information by pabloparedes (post #7) seriously, he runs the company.

Don't take my word for it , check out the other posts he has written on, including the following one where he states, "My name is Pablo Carvajal Paredes from Ecuador and I am the main representative from Dracaena travel Agency."

In answer to the original post, the bugs aren't that bad. They are attracted to light but otherwise not too troublesome, and you should have a mosquito net for sleeping.

I absolutely love creepy crawlies but prefer them not to be cuddling up to me in bed, particularly if they are a foot long and have fangs. I've been to a couple of jungle lodges (not in Ecuador though) and never had bugs in my room except for maybe a fire ant or 2. Look for a quality place.
