Rio to Sao Paulo to Bahia

Hey everyone,

I will be traveling with my wife to Brazil this winter and wanted to get some insight. All of this is tentative, but this is what we are thinking. We will be flying into Sao Paulo on the 13th of December and leaving from Rio back to Chicago sometime after the new year. We want to go to Rio, Sao Paulo, and spend New Years in Bahia where she has family. Can anyone lend any advice on what is the best way to do this? We are very flexible as nothing has been booked, but we don't want to wait much longer. We are leaving from Chicago and have a relatively open trip from there. Any suggestions on travel arrangements and time allocation? Any input would be great. Much appreciated. Thank you!

Where in Bahia? It's a state the size of France.

Just be aware that if you are in Salvador over New Year that some hotels will want a minimum stay for reveillon and will bump their prices up just as they do in Rio.

Time allocation will really be a product of your interests and where you intend to travel within Bahia. More time in Rio and Salvador less in SP is the standard formulation. As it is peak holiday season, flights and accomodation will be on the high end of things although you can still find bargains.

Try the Hotel Urbano site for deals.

Its not a bad plan. But Bahia is a huge state, as Djalma points out. You won't need to spend much time in SP (I think its a great city but others don't). You probably only need 3 days there. Your probably better off getting a flight to Rio (flights are cheap - and it beats sitting on a bus for 6 hours). A week in Rio will suffice.

Salvador will be the go to place for Reveillon. But it'll be expensive (I just booked a hostel in Rio for Reveillon and it was 500 AUD for a bed in a 6 person dorm). Salvador won't be as expensive, but it will still be exepensive.

It depends on time. There are some fantastic places just off those places like Itacare and Morro de Sao Paulo near Salvador. As well as Buzios, Paraty and Ilha Grande in Rio State.

It all depends where you want to spend NYs. As much as you would want to keep your plans flexible, it would be too much of a pain to find a room for NYs and prices will only get higher and higher as we approach the end of the year. This applies to much of BR, where Brazilians from all over the country dream to spend NYs on the beach, but even more so in larger cities such as Rio or Salvador.

I would 1st choose where to spend NYs and later plan the itinerary around this, mainly following the other posters advice. December is a great time of the year to enjoy SP, with most of the paulistas in "end of the year" mode, many families already in their summer houses by the beach, less traffic, quiet museums and not so crowded - and still great - nightlife!
