a week between Memphis and New Orleans

Hi everyone,

I'm travelling alone through the US in November/December/Jan and am trying to decide where to stay for about a week between Memphis and New Orleans (around mid November). I'm visiting mostly big places ( Philadelphia, Washington, Louisville, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Austin & Los Angeles) and was wondering if anyone had suggestings for a small place to spend a few nights - somewhere accessible by public transport. I was planning to visit Birmingham for about a week - which I understand is a big city - but have read mixed reviews about visiting there. If anyone has suggestions of an alternative stop, that would be much appreciated! Somewhere where there is a nice walking trail, place to hike, nice scenery would be great!

You're in a region where transit is not great. Is there any way you could rent a car? Without it, "walking trail, place to hike, nice scenery" will be hard to find.

With that said, I notice that Greyhound goes to Clarksdale, Vicksburg and Natchez. Combined with Baton Rouge, you're doing better than Birmingham.

I second Bzookaj's suggestion of Vickburg and Natchez, Mississippi. A lot of history, ante-bellum
mansions, great food and great people.

There are some fantastic Blues Clubs in that region as well as Zydeko Cajuin music all along the way. Dont for get to say hello to Elvis. Hiking at that time of year may be wet, and the trail system is not well defined there. If you are on your way to L.A., Denver Colorado is pretty happening as is Boulder, but Colorado will be freezing cold, like -20F in January.

The biggest hurdle here is public transportation, which is very limited. My recommendation is the train. Amtrak has a route from Memphis to New Orleans. There is also a station along the way in Jackson, MS, which has some possibilities. However, public transportation within the city will be basically limited to taxi.

There are a lot of great things to do and see in that part of the country…Blues Museum, Vicksburg National Military Park, Natchez Trace Parkway, historic Natchez, MS…however, most are not readily accessible via public transportation unfortunately.
