5 days in Kathmandu/Pokhara

Hey everyone,

My family and I have only 5 days in Kathmandu and wanted to see Kathmandu as well as Pokhara. What kind of itinerary would be best? We are more interested in sight-seeing (mountains, natural beauty) rather than trekking. I have heard from some that a private car may be better than flying between Kathmandu and Pokhara. Are these easy to arrange once you arrive in Kathmandu?

Thanks

With 5 days your schedule will be very tight – You could easily fill your time in Kathmandu and the valley with Lots to see and do with things like

1) Buddha Air Mountain Flight
2) Bodnath
3) Visit Kopan Monastery
4) Pashupatinath
5) Swayambhunath
6) Full day in Bhaktapur
7) Durbar Square Kathmandu and Patan
8) Day trip to Nagarkot and overnight – With luck spectacular sunrise

But if your hearts set on Pokhara then you should fly at least one way as it will take the best part of a day to get there by car – At least 6 hours, so you don’t want to be spending more time on the road than you do there !!

Hiring a Good Quality Private car with an experienced driver won’t be a problem, an agent or your hotel should be able to arrange this for around $100 / $120 for a one way journey

On the way you could take the cable-car to Manakamana Temple

In Pokhara
1) Paragliding
2) Micro-Light flight
3) Devi Falls and Gupteshwor Mahadev cave
4) Walk to the Peace Pagoda and then return to lakeside by boat over Fewa Tal
5) Visit The Tibetan Refugee camp
6) Sunrise at Sarangkot

Details and photos of all the above on the Things to do “Tips” section on the link in my Tag-Line

Good Luck
Rob

Hi

Good info by Rob.

Flights are about $140 so a car will be cheaper. As said, easy to arrange but given the tight time frame it's probably better to make arrangements in advance so you don't get held over a barrel.

With all there is to see in the valley it will be a rush visit.
Rob and Scoodly have posted all necessary info's,tourist bus in your case wouldn't make any sense private car hire or flight would be the way to go.

FAO #4 – Robert
Why not share all your valuable info on the open forum instead of using PM’s – Then others will also benefit from all that experience ??
Best Regards

Hi guys!

Rob - I'm wondering about Manakamana Temple that you mentioned. I'm looking to go to Pokhara over Dasain but I think the only real option for us is the Greenline. Is it possible to do the cable car then? Or would we have to find an alternate travel plan to allow us to do that? Thanks!

Hi Lucy,

I was wondering if you fancied a friend on your adventure to Pokhara? I am currently volunteering out here and have not had a chance to make friends since my job is 24/7 and was looking for some company while venturing to Pokhara over Dashian as I have it off work :)
If so would be great if not don't worry

Hi Lucy
Sorry for the delay in replying – I’ve just had a Manic week.
You could get the Greenline bus to drop you at the cable car station, but you would have to pay the full KathmanduPokhara fare, so if it were me I would just use the normal tourist bus.
Also. If it were me I would buy the cable car ticket from an agent in Kathmandu, then you are sure to get on it without a long wait
Good Luck
Rob

How convenient is the Kathmandu guesthouse to Pashupatinath? How long does it take? Is morning the best time to visit? Thanks!!

Convenient as much as any other accomodation in Thamel, you'll have to take a taxi to it,probably 300 rps.
Pashupatinath is great all day, there might be a funeral going on which can last all day. There are blessing and prayers at sunset. It is all depending to you.
