i'm sure that many will try to disagree with my post, but i am going to say it anyway. book your cheap flight, fly in at night, and get yourself a cab. some will argue that its dangerous because cabs can't be trusted. some will argue that it's dangerous because it is not safe driving at night. at the end of the day, it's all about who you trust (the cabbie) and whether or not they drive well. ok ok ok, i know that at night is typically more dangerous to drive because of: a. horses, drunks, bad lighting, etc (if you have a good cab driver with a decent car, your ok), b. taxis are dangerous (again, if you know a good cab who is trust worthy, you'll be ok), c. robberies, bandits, etc (been in nica for nearly 10 years and never heard of an armed robbery on the pan american heading north on Leon highway...robberies like this are more common in el salv and guatemala, .... if you are willing to risk it, hire a cab. i have always flown at night via spirit, its cheap, and taken a cab back home to jiquilillo 3.5 hours away. l would recommend Bidal Antonio Urbina, he's acutally an "official managua airport cab" who works on his own as well, so he will most likely be at the airport. call him at, 8686 7471. give him your name and fligh info and he will wait for you with a sign. He's trust worthy, good guy and will bring you to Leon in one piece. I've been using him for over four years and reccommend him to my guests all the time. I believe he charges $80 for the ride to Leon. Tell him that Nathan from Rancho Esperanza sent you his way, he'll take good care of you. You may flinch at the $80, but if you check into the Best Western or compare other flights, you may find it is worth your time and moneyEdited by: esperanzas

well, it is an interesting question that's come out of all this airline commentary - AA has already filed bankruptcy, and if they do cease to exist in the coming months, who will take over their flights? and how much trouble, if any, will that cause for people who are holding AA tickets?but in my personal bailiwick, thank you for all the feedback. i would like to fly jan. 23 - feb. 6 2013. i didn't see that TACA flight at 4 am, but i'm going back to look for it!
thank you, nathan, for the taxi driver's name and number. i think you're right that the $80 might be a bargain compared to other flights and the hotel in managua.
