budget accommodation in Kerala
I'm planning to spend 3 weeks in Kerala - Kochi, Alleppey, Wayanad, Ooty, Kannur - this December; can anyone give me an idea of up-to-date costs of accommodation, esp in those areas? Am I out of touch thinking I can stay somewhere clean and comfortable for around £10/ $16 / 800 rupees a night? I'd love to have the occasional stay at a homestay but not sure if I can afford it. Any recommendations very welcome!1
You'd be very lucky to get a homestay in Kochin for Rs800 per nite. It'd be cheaper to stay in Ernakulam.
We paid Rs2000 for a top double at Spencers in February, the rate in the Jan 2011 RG was stated as 1200 max. The place was full.
Inflation is taking its hold as the number of middle class nationals are starting to spend weekends away, encouraged by the absurdly low cost of rail travel. Demand exceeds supply.
Kannur, incidentally, was delightful. there seems to be only 2 sensible places to make the trip worthwhile, one being the Costa Malabari, where we stayed and the Kannur Beach House which is probably the better place but both need to be booked in advance.

I also can recommend Costa Malabari in Kannur. This homestay in Allleppey is nice: http://www.palmyresort.com/

Kannur - Ezhara Beach House.

hi,I am not recommending Palmy resort.. .. My suggestion is Snehadhara home stay .. and also for backwater cruise you can go for " Kerala Kayaking Tour " It is best way to see the backwaters ..

OP - please note that foreign travellers avoid the Kerala govt houses like the plague - not known for either their reasonable standard of cleanliness nor "service".10
vinod - please read carefully, I said avoid Keralan govt place because of their lack of etc. many travellers are totall unimpressed by the govt-run places.I know sufficient about tourism in Kerala as a consumer not as a supplier to be able to sensibly comment.
You are now revealing yourself as an employee or agent for the state tourist system - every one of your posts indicates this.
This site is designed for travellers to talk to other travellers from their own experiences and not biased by personal interests - you should therefore not be disceetly advertising - I doubt if you have ever experienced any of these facilities as an anonymous consumer.
If you carry on like this - several will object to the moderator of this site and request that you be removed as you are not a bona-fide contributor.

vinod - I would make one further point. If a private g'h or hotel owner were informed that he was losing business because of poor service and unacceptable levl of cleanliness - he would not react defensively as you have done (if he wanted to build up his business) - he would wxamine the situation and react accordingly.
Since you are clearly part of the bureaucracy of KTDC, you would be serving your masters better by pointing put that foreigners have a poor view of the facilities and seek to impove them and not accuse the foreigner of not knowing what constitutes an acceptable level of service and cleanliness and at what price.
This is the difference between private enterprise and state- ownership - the entrepreneur listens to his customers - the nationalised outfit's employees are more interested in their own bureaucracy.

There is this place called 'saj' at Fort Kochi. It was ranked by NDTV goodtimes as the best ( affordable) stay in the whole of India. Not exactly near the Fort Kochi beach but at Rs 800/- ( used to be the tariff for one day) it's a steal.http://www.sajhome.com/
I've also heard about Oy's at Fort Kochi. Reasonable rates if you are to believe their website.
