holy crap... wait no no no... you cant buy anything off the counter... yes maybe the pharmacist might do that in some cases but if it is a prescription only drug... then you certainly need a prescription... unless you are in jarkhand or bihar or UPBut... the big But... you can easily get a prescription... all you need to do is visit some local GP and tell him what you need and he will probably charge you 300 to 500 INRs and give you what you need.

Whilst you can get many medications across India; often without a prescription, you must be cautious about getting provided with spurious medications which will not work or are sub-standard (ie. fakes).I had this happen to me when I was in Dharamsala some years back, when I obtained some medication for an infection but it was not working as it should have done.
If you have an infection, it's often better to purchase from a proper pharmacy, not one of the roadside stalls that sell various medicines, some out of date.
