Toyota Corolla in Central AmericaMy boyfriend and I are thinking about driving down through Central America in Jan 2013 - taking 5 - 6 mos to travel to the Panama Canal. We are hoping to hit most of the major tourist areas but only a couple of the larger cities - Panama City, Mexico City specifically. I know there are a lot of posts on driving in Central America, insurance, borders etc. We have a Toyota Corolla and are wondering how the roads are for this type of vehicle. Would appreciate hearing for anyone but particularly anyone who has doen the trip recently in a similar vehicle. Thanks

1That car would be just fine 99% of the time. Most the taxis in Costa Rica at the airport are Corollas, though Diesels...
The only time you would want a AWD or ground clearance of an SUV would be in rainy season (May to Nov) in some of the more remote reaches where the road is not not surfaced and you have to cross small creeks and rivers.
As for the driving part, check out Driving the Americas website.
Rule #1- Dont drive at night, it gets dark at 530pm.
Rule #2- Dont leave anything in the car unattended. Park in secure parking areas at hotels.
Rule #3- see rule #1 & #2.
I highly recommend Spanish Immersion prior to trip and also in Guatemala a few weeks, will help you a ton on a trip like this.
This guy did Canada to Panama in 10 days in a older hyundai coupe...

3You've gotten good advice so far. The good thing about the Corolla is that it's a popular car in most of Central America so there's no problem getting it fixed cheaply in the rare event you have car problems.
